  • Apple TV+ cancels 'High Desert' after only one season

The moves are made typically as a cost-cutting measure by the services.

What, they can’t afford the hard disk space?
It’s all about actor’s residuals. While a show remains on the streaming service, there are ongoing payments to the main actors in the show. And they can be quite significant amounts of money.
    Check out: https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/calculating-sag-residuals-17706/

I’m not so sure. I could have sworn that it was about tax law and write offs. For example, while you have a show available for streaming on your platform, theoretically it is enhancing the value of the network. But, if you remove it from streaming, then you can write off a portion of the production costs as a loss because it is no longer adding any value of any kind to the platform.
Incidentally, one of the reasons for the current writers strike is that the residuals are as much as 100 times lower than for network TV shows. If the writers are not lying about this then it would make sense that residuals would NOT be a major factor in the removal of shows from streaming platforms.

  • Engwe M20 ebike review: Fewer adjustment capabilities with solid motor power

Our local multi-use trails (Chicago Metro area) have all banned any motorized vehicles on the trail. Unfortunately, they lack the capability to enforce the rules, so we're seeing more and more of these menaces to everyone using leg power.

I was going to comment on the nature-trail remark in the article, as I don't think these types of vehicles should be used on walking/hiking trails. In some of our parks, there are dedicated trails for bikes, separate from walking and running. Maybe more parks need to consider that.
Many mountain bikers aren’t enthused about electric bike riders on bike trails either.
Personally, it hasn’t been a problem for me, but there it is…

  • Apple Pay business development director exits the company

Seems to me like he had a pretty successful run at Apple. I’m very happy with ApplePay and it’s finally gotten to the point that I can use it almost everywhere. I tapped my watch on someone’s phone the other day to pay a merchant—that was new to me.
If he can say “mission accomplished” and move on to a new challenge, more power to him!

  • Apple's $50M keyboard settlement deemed 'fair & reasonable' by US judge

Was this really as big of a deal as everyone seemed to make it out to be?
My 2017 MBP was fine through the initial reports of keyboard failure. I even posted a few comments like this.
But it went bad in 2020 and made typing without an external keyboard very frustrating. I was hesitant to spend the $100s to replace because I mostly used the machine for photography and layout and it worked fine for that.

But yeah, some of the keys would double or triple enter and others would not respond without an extra press. Copy editing became excruciating.  It was the only apple keyboard in 30 years I had problems like that with. Anecdotal, I know, but it fit with the complaints…

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max rumored to be only model that gets new periscope lens tech

    techconc said:
I really hate it when Apple makes features for just the Max sized phone.  I don't care about the price, I just don't want to carry a phone that big. I'm due for an upgrade and I'd love to see this feature in the regular iPhone 15 pro.
It’s likely a space thing, not a conspiracy. When they used to this w/ the image stabilization camera it rolled out on the bigger phone first, and eventually they got it into the smaller devices. These devices don’t step out of a clamshell full formed, they take engineering and knowledge and experience.
There is another possibility. It’s possible that with a new technology Apple can’t be sure that they can ramp up production for the 100gazillion new components they need for the whole pro line.

If they start on only half the pro models and there is a hang up in production of the new cameras at least they have the other pro line to sell while they get production up to snuff.

No other company has to consider ramping up from 0 to 10s of millions like Apple does. Just imagine how people would be calling for Tim’s head if the whole Pro line was massively constrained because of unforeseen periscope ramp issues—or if they had to push the Pro line release to December.

I can’t say that if this is a factor in this decision, the fact that it might push some people to consider the more expensive model wouldn’t also be seen as a plus…
