  • Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute are Apple's answer to generative AI

    DAalseth said:
There are a few things that would be useful, an improved Siri for example. But there has never in my recollection been a WWDC keynote where I said “Oh F*** no” quite as many times. Many of their headline abilities I will just want to disable as soon as I can and as completely as I can. I AM an artist. I AM a writer. I have no use for AI generating my images and text.
Remember that you are not required to upgrade the operating system on any of your existing Apple devices. You are free to stick with iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma (or earlier).

Here's what I wrote in a separate thread: "Remember that almost everything Apple's devices can be disabled. Location Services, Notifications, Siri, iCloud services, Face ID, Touch ID, Apple Pay, microphone access, photo library access, camera access, music library access, Bluetooth, Wifi, whatever. You can basically run your iPhone like an iPod circa 2008 if you want."

Hell, you can turn off spell checking and auto punctuation if you want for a pristine GIGO experience.

If you have used Apple devices for more than a month and watched the keynote presentation with a modicum of attention, you will have noticed that these are ALL optional actions. If you just want to write an e-mail and hit send, you are still free to do so. You are free to type out your grocery list on Notes, draw stick figure people, make spelling errors, etc.

  • ChatGPT coming to iOS 18 for free later in 2024

“Requests aren't logged and user data isn't saved”.

My question and I suppose the deal breaker for would be: Are all interactions with ChatGPT used to “train” it? Because train clearly means consume and to an extent own. So it makes it hard to feel comfortable using it for anything professional. Many companies forbid using any LLM based services out of reasonable fear of company/client secrets being slurped up.
I really don’t see how Apple can honor their commitment to end-user privacy while baking in OpenAI’s little snitch at a system level.
I’m as concerned about OpenAI getting the data period, let alone it being attached to my identity.
Did you not watch the demo? The user has to give explicit approval to send the data to ChatGPT.

Remember that almost everything Apple's devices can be disabled. Location Services, Notifications, Siri, iCloud services, Face ID, Touch ID, Apple Pay, microphone access, photo library access, camera access, music library access, Bluetooth, Wifi, whatever.

You can basically run your iPhone like an iPod circa 2008 if you want. You don't even need to give any credentials if you're okay giving up the App Store and media stores.

  • Apple TV owners can now update to tvOS 17.5

C'mon guys! No mention of what features or fixes are in the update, the link to 17.5 takes you to an AppleInsider page just talking about TvOS17 in general, and there's no link to the apple.com site with the update.  A completely worthless article other than a PSA to update if you want.
The article explicitly states that there are no publicly-facing notes of interest. If you look at the other Apple software releases today it's basically the same thing across the board: bug fixes and security enhancements from this update. And if you've owned Apple devices for more than a year, you'll know what Apple's release notes for this kind of update are like: devoid of detail.

It's clear that Apple has moved on and put these all in maintenance mode. All of their efforts are being poured into the new versions that will be previewed next month at Apple WWDC.

I would expect a couple more point releases strictly for fixing bugs and patching security holes but iOS 17, macOS 14 Sonoma, et al are done getting new functionality.

  • Apple inching closer to ChatGPT deal with OpenAI

I posted a photo that illustrated Siri's presence on the iPhone. A picture is worth a thousand words. It also shows dates when the brand icon changed.

I know nothing about Samsung, have never used any of their phones. Never mentioned Samsung in my post.

As for why Apple retained the Siri branding, I have no idea. Maybe they liked the name. Maybe it was already trademarked and they didn't want to launch another trademark search to replace something that already had substantial brand recognition.

  • Tesla reaches settlement in autopilot death case of Apple engineer

Elon Musk announced that Tesla will be investing $10 Billion in FSD technology for this year alone. They are dead serious that this will be a solvable problem.
It is reasonable to assume that FSD is a solvable problem. The big question is when.

We have already seen many companies come and go because they couldn't get FSD to work before they ran out of VC cash. But the castoff survivors of those shuttered companies will go to work elsewhere, many on the same problem. Eventually it will happen.

Rome wasn't built in a day and today's smartwatches are a far cry from what the cellular telephone was in the late Eighties, in many instances far more interesting scenarios than Dick Tracy's watch television or the Star Trek communicator (which didn't even have video).
