  • Apple, Intel engineers reportedly tightly engaged to produce 5G modem for future iPhone

I dont think the Baseband will ever be part of the SoC for Apple.

Judging by these information, my bet is that next year Intel will finally win 100% of the modem order from Apple.

Apple will just need a small team to help a few middleware engine optimized for Mac and Metal 2 API. There already have this for iOS but not for Mac, and there are finite amount of Middleware now for games compares to years ago when everyone are making their own Engine.

And have decent GPU for Mac from Top to Bottom. No more silly Intel iGPU
    .
And that's it. You just need a to make a platform they could use and they will come. The numbers from the recent quarter report just shows that there are more Mac users then ever.
i used to be a hardcore gamer (was a reporter for a few E3 conferences back in the day), but i don’t think apple is interested in that crowd. it’s niche even on the PC platform.
Ok. By nice GPU, i dont mean it have to be a hardcore top end GPU, just anything from Nvidia or AMD will do. Intel's drivers just aren't good for gaming.

And It isn't about targeting gamers, so it is not about building a good gaming Machine, and convince gamers to buy a mac. It is more like a Mac, but also capable of gaming. By "they" will come i mean Games will come. Not users ( They are there )  Support Mac Platform is much easier with Middleware and iOS user base.

A funny enough, it is the casual group of games, or casual in the sense that it doesn't require top end Gfx to play that are making the most money. Especially in China, and it is still growing. Another trend that is happening and will happen soon, is the seamless switching between a Game on your Mobile and Game on your larger machine.

In case no one realize, all these so call in App services revenue are 80%+ Gaming Revenue, since Google is left out in China, iOS or Apple is the largest gaming platform in the world in terms of revenue.

I dont think SJ ever liked games, may be he thinks it is a waste of time. And funny enough iOS never were about gaming either, but the money and usage forced them to rethink. I think it is time to rethink too, Apple TV, Mac. What can Apple leverage the gamers on iOS to their other parts of ecosystem.

Note: The largest of group of casual Gamers is now nearly 60% female in China. Majority of are in their 10s and 20s. Use and Love Apple. Mac are doing well and still has many potential in Chinese consumer market.

  • Apple sacks iPhone X engineer after daughter posts hands-on video to YouTube

I find it, slightly uncomfortable that someone thinks firing is wrong. Because any grown up adult should have known better.

The only person, ever to allow filming a Video on new unreleased iPhone, and Apple Campus is Steve Jobs. Unfortunately that person is long gone.

Losing iPhone 4 - unintentional , ( May have been fired but we dont know )
HomePod Firmware - unintentional, also a company policy and mistake.
Uploading iOS 11 GM ( May be fired but we dont know )

    Unless his Dad didn't know
    1. He is not allowed to film an unreleased product.
    2. He is not allowed to film inside Apple HQ
    3. He is not allowed and should know better not to upload the film to public viewing, especially on a popular site like Youtube.
    ~4. He signed an NDA

    So -
If he didn't knew any of the 2 point above, he should be fired anyway, what is the point of a company continue to have you if you dont even know the basic of basic policy.
Point 3 - If he didn't know his daughter was filming, or was going to upload to youtube, which is clearly shown in the video, then..... I am wordless.....

And finally, we are talking about Apple. The company which is known for its secrecy, the company that hired agents from FBI to CIA to prevents leaks of Information. The company that had courses and lecture to its employees on these security issues. There are 14 billion other company you could have done that.

And the Data is US centric, I believe iPhone 8 in EU aren't doing so good, and basically all the Asia region are doing pretty bad.

    Yup.

I’m waiting to see what the iPhoneX is like before buying the X, the 8, or staying with what I’ve got.
Google Pixel 2 is flawed by screen burn in. OLED defendents claimed that that was an old issue already resolved. But a recent phone with presumably good tech still presents OLED burn in.

So I wouldn’t take the risk, even with Apple and would stay with the good old LCD. I bought my iPhone 8 Plus a couple of days ago and TrueTone is wonderful.
The 2XL with the burn-in uses Plastic OLED, versus AMOLED. We'll see what Apple's using -- but I suspect it's the latter.
Isn’t POLED and AMOLED just the names LG and Samsung use for their display tech?

It is, but there is a huge difference in the maturity of the display technology deployed by those 2 companies. LG has started with the OLED display technology for smartphones only this year. All of their flagship phones until last year used LCD technology. Samsung has been using OLED for lot of years and faced burn-in in earlier years and resolved the issues and matured the technology to what it is now. So there is an important distinction to be made, while talking about OLED which was NOT made by @macplusplus. Mike was correct in pointing out the differences. The chances of iPhone X suffering from burn-in should be close to Nil because Apple chose Samsung to manufacture the panels for them who are at a different level in this technology.
    1. This isn't LG first mobile OLED. P-OLED and AMOLED came out at about the same time. But Samsung has millions of its flagship phone to test and put out their AMOLED. LG never really had a mobile phone business, at least not in any decent size, and especially not in the top end market where these OLED are used. LG decide to focus on larger panels with their WOLED, and see how well they are doing now on that front.

    2. The burn in issues do exist in Samsung's panel, but they have been improving on it for so long that you are not likely to see it in one to 2 years time. And that is a problem, because Apple's iPhone tends to have a longer usage cycle then Android...........

    3. I still dont understand why Apple choose to use OLED. There isn't anyone who could provide them alternative quality OLED screen next year. And highly unlikely in 2019. So Apple is basically stuck with Samsung for nearly three years with no creditable alternative sources. Yes there are huge number of Chinese companies making and jumping on the OLED tech, but i dont expect them to come close to Samsung in such short period time. JDI is only just starting now..............
