How the Apple TV+ adaptation of 'Foundation' differs from its source
entropys said:It is the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire in space. The Foundation crew were the monks preserving knowledge. That is the core story.Only superficially, and only for the stories in the first book.It gets far far more interesting as the story evolves. -
Microsoft says Windows on ARM will not support Apple M1 Macs
MacPro said:'Not supporting' isn't as bad as declaring it illegal I'd have thought.22july2013 said:Isn't Microsoft's main reason for existence the creation of operating systems for other people's hardware? We may see them change this stance in the future, if/when the platform stabilizes and Microsoft finds that they can start supporting new platforms in the future. The other issue may simply be that Microsoft isn't in the business of reverse-engineering Apple's architectures. It's worth noting that they only supported Intel Macs via BootCamp - where Apple provided the device drivers necessary to make everything work. Microsoft may be unwilling to support the platform unless/until Apple provides something comparable for the platform. If so, we may be waiting a very very long time, since Apple doesn't seem to have any interest in supporting any other operating system on this hardware platform. -

Apple reportedly plans to make iOS detect child abuse photos
crowley said:shamino said:Abuse is more than just child pornography, and non-pornographic abuse photos are not illegal. What happens if I visit Amnesty International's web site, read a few articles, and view photos of children that were beaten by an abuser? Is Apple going to tell law enforcement that I am now abusing children simply because I have the pictures on my phone? What if I decide to save these photos in order to republish them on a blog or in a newsletter? What if I work for Amnesty and took the photos myself?...Nothing you've described is a nightmare, all are very easily solvable with a simple conversation.Of course, because when the police arrest you on accusations of a serious felony, the always believe you when you try to give an explanation. They have never been known to confiscate all your personal electronics and leave you to sit in jail while they conduct their own investigation.Simple conversations don't work when you've been pre-judged as a pedophile. And anything you say can and will be used against you.I hope you can afford a good lawyer, because the ones appointed by the court won't listen to you either. They'll try to convince you to plead to a lesser charge. -

Abuse is more than just child pornography, and non-pornographic abuse photos are not illegal. What if I work for Amnesty and took the photos myself? And what about law enforcement officers, who are obligated to take photos of abuse victims? Will they also be subject to this automated system? And if not, does that create a loophole where a crooked cop can trade in this filth without scrutiny?i don't see a possible way that this feature could be implemented without it becoming a nightmare scenario. Both the false positives and false negatives will destroy people's lives, even if the problems are eventually corrected. The only way to win this game is to not play.
