  • Rumored 'Mac Studio' and new Apple display leaked in renders

Still thinking this AM that thing looks like a heat sink. No fan. Only question is about the power supply.

  • Safari Translation uncovers March 8 event hints on international Apple sites

The article is wrong about the Chinese site. It has a version of the event name as well, 高能传送 gāonéng chuánsòng, which means (in a scientific sense) “high-energy transmission” [I see Apple and Google agree with me!]

Chinese wordplays are layered and can employ hidden allusions, so I’m not sure, but in general I’d say this is just auspicious language. Chuánsòng evokes things like passing along knowledge and giving gifts. Gāo means high/peak and néng means ability/skill (in physics it means “energy”).

Could it be fanless? That weird height seems like it might be about heat.

I can imagine the sell — talking all about how the first desktop-class M1 SoC goes above and beyond (ultra literally means “beyond”) and so on, then at the end, the kicker: oh, by the way, recording in your studio? No problem — this box is completely silent.

Logic people, can we have a little logic.
The M1 MacMini uses about half the volume of the device compared to the Intel MacMini. Also not a lot of the thermal envelop.

Apple could put an M1 Max or more in the old design and still have design up their sleeve.
What is on earth was the mock-up artist thinking might need the device to be twice as high. No need to increase power supply or cooling capacity without some additional function in there. Afterburner or second SOC would seem to be the only options seeing they are saying non-3rd Party. But then you need lots of cooling say front to back if they are vertical fin to fit in the space.

If it is going to take even a half-length card as an option the doubling direction is still all wrong.

The current Mac mini case couldn't run the M1 Max at sustained performance. It would need to be bigger with better active cooling.
But yet the MacBook Pro can.  My guess is that, if it needs that much cooling space, it's going to be something more powerful than the M1 Max.

  • Apple's new display rumored to launch at Apple event alongside new Mac mini

Is the PEEK "typo" in the invitation meant to hint at a sneak peek of the future performance you think? Maybe even the Mac Pro?
You’re not alone in thinking that, but Ming-chi Kuo has poured some cold water on it, so I’m not optimistic about seeing the Mac Pro and the new Pro Display.

I think there are two things going on in the event title: the peek/peak pun of course but also a double meaning for “performance” — what happens in a studio? Performances!

That leaves me feeling pretty confident about the iMac Studio : Mac Studio : Apple Studio Display XDR : MacBook Studio, but I’m fully prepared to be massively disappointed—this isn’t my first rodeo!

As for the processor “peak performance” meaning, I’m guessing M1 Ultra (ultra means “beyond”) — the rumored 12-core, plus desktop-class graphics performance, beyond what’s possible in a laptop. I don’t expect them to come out with another M1 Max that isn’t in the MacBook Pros.
