How to take a screenshot on a Mac - the comprehensive guide
Soli said:Having to press to 4 and four buttons for a screenshot is excessive when you're using this feature often. I suggest changing it to Command-3 and Command-4 for saving the desktop and window, respectively, to the desktop. It's an easy edit in Sys Prefs » Keyboard pane » Shortcuts tab.

What I haven't seen – maybe because there may be no native support for it – is how to take shots of entire webpages in Safari. I wish someone would give that issue some love, since it comes up a lot more often, for me anyway, than the regular screenshot functionality.
Also in Cmd-Shift-4, you can hit the space bar to take a screenshot on the window your in.Or any of your open windows (even if they are mostly hidden) Good call netling - i have always liked the space bar --> window option. The auto-naming of Apple screenshots with the date & time down to the second is also a wonderful thing. -
