  • Review: Arlo Ultra is a 4K HomeKit-ready smart home camera with endless features

Review from actual user: 0 out of 5.
    Absolutely DO NOT BUY.
On the other hand I use a real Homekit compatible camera and it has problems too, like nowhere in the installation does it say it won't connect with a standard 5 GHz wifi network like the Apple Time Capsule or my ISP's wireless router/modem. These glitches would never happen with an Apple-branded camera. Apple doesn't have a camera, but there is hope, since Apple recently bought a camera company's portfolio: https://forums.appleinsider.com/discussion/209823
FWIW, i have. OMNA 180Cam HD, HomeKit compatible, and its been very reliable for more than the 6or so months that i have had it (100%)

  • Nikon launches full-frame mirrorless cameras with wireless iPhone & Mac support

I recently purchased a Nikon SLR, to replace by previous D90 that decided to stop working right in the middle of taking pictures of the total eclipse in South Carolina last year.

great camera - but two things that I hate... and two things that might be improved with the above camera - looking forward to a review...
     - the awful snap bridge app, and its terrible user interface and unreliable iteration - to get pics thro wifi from the camera. Its especially poor if you are outside bit occasionally in range of (say your homes trusted wifi - where the camera keeps disconnecting, its appalling.

     - the fact that you cannot charge the camera vis USB cable, you're forced to carry the large battery charger and remove the battery every time.

I have a Sony NEX6 and NEX7, and I regret not going Sony again,

  • Hands on with Apple's 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro with i7 processor

Forget about benchmarks for the moment. Set the MBP next to the XPS, setup a rendering using the same software (Adobe, whatever) and see who finishes first and by how much. That’s a real world test in my book.
Preferably two tests. One that should take a couple minutes, and one that will take maybe 30 minutes.

I'm curious to know what happens when you have your iPhone next to the Mac and then trigger Siri using "Hey Siri". I assume it is triggered on both devices and both will try to process the request?
When you make a request to Siri then all your Apple kit in the vicinity have a quick chat with each other to decide who should pick up the request. How they decide is one of life’s mysteries.

If I have my phone in my hand then the phone handles it. If the phone is on the desk then the HomePod gets to answer, occasionally deferring to the phone.
its not always clean though and sometimes frustrating. On my way home I raise my Apple Watch and say Siri open my right garage door. great! BUT if my iPhone is on its mag charger in the car it decides ( sometimes) to take over, and doesnt open my garage door, instead siri says I will have to unlock my iPhone first!

Worse - and this could easily be remedied in code, at home I might say siri please call my wife into my watch or iPhone, and it starts sirir, but then my homepod tells me that it cannot make calls
not the end of the world, but occasionally very inconvenient.

  • iPhone 7 survives two day 30-foot submergence, text at depth alerts diver

I just don't see how it's possible that the iPhone could pick up a usable cellular signal at 30 below the surface in sea water. The signal attenuation at high frequencies like GSM in salt water is significant. For the phone to talk back to the tower would require a lot more power than the battery life indicated. I suspect that the notification was from something other than a recent message.

This highly technical paper agrees with what I know (and I'm a EE):
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4934316/
A year ago in may I dropped my iPhone 7 into approx 7 feet of seawater. Right of my dock while I was putting the cover in. Black iPhone 7 in a ball case that also held my drivers license and two credit cards.
Its a very muddy bottom, and I dove into the water to try to find it with no luck. "find iPhone" seemed to be working for about 30 minutes then it gave up. Within 30 minutes of loosing it, all calls to the phone went to voicemail.
so no - not even 7 feet in salt water.
