  • New Mac mini has a slotted & removable SSD -- but don't expect upgrades

    DosDude1 has this all figured out.  Upgrades aren’t cheap once you add the cost of the custom PCBs and the fact that the NANDs are pricey in any market (used or new).   

    The fact that regular aftermarket upgrades are not available for the Studio shows you how little demand there is at any price.  

    Even the video rendering peeps say a good USB-C SSD is fast enough for full-time video work. 

    But it’s a good start!

  • iPhones stored for forensic analysis unexpectedly reboot, causing problems for police

    Didn’t know the iphone is harder to hack if it’s been restarted and not unlocked after a reboot compared to just locked after being used generally.  

    I’m guessing that none of the phones have know unlock codes.  

    Unless cops are uninformed, I would expect standard phone practice to be to plug any evidence phones into chargers to prevent battery drain, but what do I know?

  • Hands on: Apple's USB-C accessories leave us wanting more

    Most of us here at AppleInsider are fairly agnostic on the placement of the charging port on the Magic Mouse. It charges very fast and never has been an issue.

    I still use a Magic Mouse with two AA cells and have to change them (and charge them) every month or so like a caveman, so anyone who complains about the location of the charging port has my disdain and gets a big frown from me (but not AI, of course).

    I’m more inconvenienced by reading about people complaining about the button than I will be fumbling for the button.  

    Why is everyone such a drama queen? 

    “Hey, Tim!”

    ”What is it, master designer of the Mac mini power button?”

    ”If I put the power button on the bottom and people have to lift the mini to turn it on about once a month, we’ll get tons of press from YouTubers, Apple Haters, and thousands of posts talking about Apple for the 10-12 years if we use this design.  Do you approve?”

    ”Approved.  It worked for the rechargeable Magic Mouse, didn’t it?”

    (USB-C mouse designer enters and immediately leaves the room.)

  • M4 iMac vs 2019 Intel iMac compared: Five years makes a big difference

    My 27” iMac drives two 30” Cinema displays.  

    It’s only now giving me freeze-ups.   

    To properly migrate to M4, I really want retina displays and that’s a huge chunk of change on top of a well-stocked mini (32GB, 1 or 2 TB).   

    Maybe when APPL hits $300.
