Apple Hardware Engineering VP DJ Novotney exits for Rivian

Apple has been hiring automotive engineers for the last 7 years for the car that will never come. Many have come back to the Automotive world where products are actually being produced.I don’t see this as a real big plus to Rivian or minus to Apple. It’s just churn. Rivian is in dire need of cost reduction and Apple is trying to outsource building a car by buying 1000s of off-the-shelf components and slapping some Apple-designed skin on it to sell at 40% margins.
Rivian is doing it for their life and Apple thinks there’s some crazy money to be made in EVs because 2014 when they started, Tesla was the hot new commodity.
Apple could just buy a Chinese EV company, but the state would require a local joint-venture. Apple isn’t that dumb. But they’re also not desperate. They have a few billion dollars to throw around and still come out smelling fine. -
'Strong action' is coming if the EU doesn't like Apple's App Store concessions
Was the spirit of the law access to iPhone hardware or through and App Store for free?
Is the letter of the law access to iPhone hardware or through and App Store for free?
I don't think any company can or should be forced to give away access to its hardware or the tools to do so.
iPhone isn't a Mac or a PC where one merely develops software that can be downloaded and installed by a user. That's an older ecosystem fraught with privacy and security hazards. That's why the iPhone is locked down (or at least one reason given).
I'm not saying Apple's charges for this side-loading is fair to everyone. It's really hard to define "fair" because it's such a weasel word used by weasels who complain they're not getting something for free or for not letting them play in your sandbox and with your toys on your property on their schedule not yours, etc. -

Apple Car is delayed -- again
Apple is definitely working in a car. They have hired automotive engineers and managers and had various popcorn modules quoted by Tier One suppliers. Some of those managers and engineers have quit Apple since and some suppliers have told Apple to pound sand. Apple wants to pay the lowest price and does not guarantee a reasonable volume to justify it.
What hasn’t happened is that it hasn’t amounted to any progress towards a leaked design or even a prototype that we are aware of. It’s the industry's worst kept secret, except there’s little information to be had because it is a secret. An NDA-kind of secret.I’ve no other information except these vague generalities and logical conclusions. Little has changed in the last 3 years. -
