Russian watchdog says Apple's App Store rules and behaviors are anticompetitive
Apple need to press for much more use of web apps by these free-lunchers, so these jokers know they have an alternative to the app store. If Apple needs to provide some APIs for mobile safari that hook into iOS features securely then so be it. Then kick any whiners like Spotify out. Let them do their own marketing and see how successful they are without Apple’s app store. Apple could even create a distinct app to highlight the latest cool web-apps. -
27-inch iMac teardown shows lack of storage upgrade options
ajl said:Another stupid choice from the think different verb preachers.
One should pay thousands for a machine that is supposed to last a lot years without any possibility of later upgrades?
The whole point of an “all in one” is a nicer looking machine while sacrificing upgradeability that most of us don’t need.
My 2014 iMac currently runs off a choice of external SSD drives so I can switch from High Sierra to Mojave to Catalina on a simple reboot.
This allows me to use 32 bit apps when necessary, old versions of XCode for older enterprise apps built with older SDKs etc. all with one 6 year old iMac.

Tim Cook's leadership style has 'reshaped how Apple staff work and think'
marsorry said:Except for the iMac - the Fat Bezels must die!
But Apple has to be careful, the larger you are the further you can fall, and this of course means they can’t be as lean and fast to market as they could 15 years ago. But so far, the new Cook era products (Watch and Airpods) have been fantastic. In fact, they fit so seamlessly and invisibly into owners lives that they seem obvious yet magical extensions of the wearer. Glasses (and ring?) will only extend in this area.
I suspect the Apple Car area might have been a personal pet project for someone who likely didn’t realise the enormity of it when setting out. I suspect it will have benefited Apple in some ways but must have been (or still is?) a bit of a money pit. Then again, that’s just the nature of things. On the R&D versus returning money to investors issue, I feel that Apple likely spends as much on R&D as it needs and there is no benefit to just spending more on the same results. So much of the surplus is returned to investors, but in my mind they likely have spent too much on buy-backs (and I say this as an AAPL investor) - I would rather they kept even more in reserves. -
Apple's block of Xcloud & Stadia game streaming apps is at best consumer-hostile
One more point, Apple want to protect the app-store from ultra-violent or pornographic material as much as possible.
If they allow game-store apps then they will end up with filth ridden games like on Steam. Not cool.
There’s a place for that, it’s outside the app-store, it’s called the web / web-apps. -

This is Apple’s platform they can make whatever rules they want.
And the rules are intended to protect the platform.
I don’t want app-stores wihin the app-store or a game-store within the app-store.
If Apple allow this then we will just get more and more lower quality online only streamed “apps” so the developer lists the shell app for free while taking all the proceeds without giving Apple anything.
Apple rules protect the platform and ensure it’s long-term survival. However, all Microsoft has to do is make a web version that works in Safari, i.e. make a web-app instead of an app-store app.
But then Microsoft wouldn’t get to piggyback all of Apple’s investment and efforts for nothing would they?
Microsoft are lazy and want a free ride.
Microsoft (and all the other whingers that want a free ride from Apple) should be ashamed of themselves.
Apple rules are pro-consumer because they ensure safety, privacy and more importantly long-term success of the eco-system.
