Leaked memo suggests Nokia's health business is unhealthy
AppleInsider said:Less than two years after Nokia bought health and fitness gear maker Withings for $192 million ... Nokia announced last fall that it would write down $164 million U.S. on the purchase of Withings, revealing it overpaid for the health device maker.
No it doesn’t mean they overpaid. It means that under their management it lost $164M in value. That takes real skills. They should state that plainly and clearly. Lots of big corporations out there aspire to that sort of incompetence.
Ive got a withings scale - love it. Hope they sell this business to someone with actual ideas for bargain basement price so we get more innovation.
Total software updates for my scale since Nokia took over: zero.
Yep - do nothing with a $192M business for a few years and yep, it’ll lose value. Duh?!? -
Apple cracks down on unsanctioned use of its emoji designs in third-party apps
Professional graphics designers have known for years that you need to license and pay for every font and every graphic. Most fonts and graphics now have specific pricing for including these in 'apps'. By Apple ignoring people stealing their own assets they also were stealing from many other vendors who would otherwise sell/license these type of assets to the developers.
So cheers - well done Apple. -
Apple HomePod vs. Google Home Max: Which high-end smart speaker is right for you?
HomePod is also a part of the HomeKit ecosystem. I wouldn't buy HomePod specifically for that, just like I didn't buy AppleTV specifically for that. But once I had it, and I found a need for a little home automation (being able to turn off downstairs lights without going downstairs), I realized HomeKit was the quickest/easiest route to go because I already had the AppleTV. I think Apple are hoping the same will go for HomePod: it'll drive up adoption of HomeKit simply by just 'being there already'. -
Tips: If you're holding off on macOS High Sierra, turn off upgrade notifications for good

Depending on workload naturally, but the microcode changes to resolve Spectre variant 2 have can significantly degrade performance. Intel are advising customers that future processors with fixes for Spectre will have the 'feature' disabled by default and it should only be enabled discretionally by the customer. Crazy.
