  • Tim Cook says return to office work plan is 'the mother of all experiments'

    darkvader said:
COVID proved what we all really knew anyway:  If you work in an office, your job can be done without leaving the house.  It's time to end commuting for office workers forever.

Hey, here's a thought:  Maybe it's time to mandate commuting pay.  If an employer decides a job can't be done from home, then that employer must pay the employee for time spent commuting.  That way people who really do have to be physically present get paid for ALL the time spent in work-related activities.

    1.  The job often cannot be done the same way, depending on the industry and position.  In-person meetings and collaboration are important in many fields.
    2.  Mandate it? Good lord. Is there no end to what nanny state leftists want to mandate? This is a horrendously awful idea.

I do it on my phone only.  Unless a release bricks the phone, it’s all on iCloud anyway.  I’d be hesitant on my Mac. iPad? I don’t do it but I could as it’s just a secondary device.
One can install a new macOS on a different partition/drive for testing. If it all goes to hell, you can simply reboot from the original startup disk and basically walk away.

For a phone, if there are problems, you need to spend time resetting, installing, restoring apps, etc. On production iOS releases, the window to downgrade is very short, typically a week or so. There's also the time factor to consider.

Disclaimer: I upgraded my Mac to Monterey last month (May 2022) and upgraded a few iDevices to iOS/iPadOS 15 around the same time.

Due to Apple's piss poor software QA, I have stopped upgrading to the new release in the fall. I'd rather wait 6-8 months rather than deal with "release" [sic] software that I consider to be early beta quality.

This wasn't always the case with Apple, it's a sad development within the past 5-6 years. Normally I would install the new release within a couple of days but the last time I did that was Sierra.

    I completely skipped Crapalina.

Undoubtedly I will upgrade to macOS Ventura and iOS/iPodOS 16 in April or May 2023.
Again, unless the phone is bricked, it’s really not a big deal if I have to reset it and restore. I’ve never had to do that. You’re right about the partition. That’s probably the way to go. Right now I’ve never had major issues with release software.

  • App Store is still growing, but not as much as expected says Katy Huberty

Not sure how an app store with an infinitely expanding collection of 99% useless apps is supposed to be a sign of health, but one which doesn't expand in terms of the number of apps is tagged as unhealthy or concerning. To me, a slowdown would indicate that the store's getting too crowded to support new devs, and the fact that the platform has basically stayed the same for over a decade for the most part. There might be more than 10 great apps which have paid to push themselves to the top of lists, searches, etc. But we may never know because they're buried under everything else thanks to the search options Apple has implemented.

Dear Apple: Make your search function in the appstore more powerful please! We need more curated lists of apps which are actually good, not ones which match a set of keywords or socially-promoted criteria.

Lot of bullshit in this post. "The platform basically stayed the same". Uh, no. The App Store has had massive changes and improvements over the past decade. 10 great apps? What?

There's a ton of curated app lists in the store, and lots of editorialized content. I've never, ever had an issue finding high quality apps. Also, this isn't a "sign" of anything. An App Store can't keep growing at an exponential rate, you reach a point of saturation.
He fell for the analyst nonsense. Think about the implication.  The App Store is declining!  In fact, that’s not at all the case.  It’s expanding year-over-year just not quite as quickly. “Decline in revenue growth year over year.”  Never mind that it’s growing during an increasingly tough time.

  • Apple wants to make the iPad more laptop-like with iPadOS 16

Apple should just go all-in for the iPad Air and iPad Pro.  Put a touch interface capable MacOS on it. There is no reason this can't be done, especially now that they have the same architecture.  Keep iPadOS with additional multitasking for the base iPad and iPad mini.  Give me a compelling reason to make an iPad my primary device.  The lack of real multitasking is most of it now.  Screen size is enough for most of what I do on my 14' MBP.  Hardware is fast enough.  Keyboards have gotten good enough.  There's no reason not to go all the way.
