  • Which Apple W1-equipped headphones are right for you?

AirPods are the really one of those products that are much better in real life than the specs would have you believe. What makes them so nice is that everything is easy. Charging is just putting them in the case. Turning them on is just taking them out of the case. Pairing is opening the case. Everything you do with them seems intuitive and obvious, and it's very satisfying.

caveats: I have an Apple Watch, so that's how I use volume control. I have never used Siri on them because, well, Siri.

  • Unboxing LG's 27-inch UltraFine 5K Display with Thunderbolt 3

Just opened mine and set it up. The screen is AMAZING! It is by far the best screen I've ever seen.

  • Quick take video review: LG's UltraFine 4K Display

That's one of the best video reviews I've seen. Very even handed and information dense. I've bern looking to find out if it's glossy or not, and I didn't know about the port speeds, which makes me want the 5K version. Also, the metal base and the lack of wobbling makes me think this is a more premium product than I realized.

  • Colbert's 'Late Show' skewers cost, content of Apple's new design book

I think what upsets people about this book is that it follows a pattern where Apple seems to be making products that only relatively wealthy people will be able to easily afford. I don't doubt the value, but I feel they could have made a very good book for $99 that a lot more people would buy and enjoy. Another example of Apple pushing up the price point is that the new MBP is about $200 more expensive across the board. This contrasts with Apple's previous pattern of introducing new machines at the same price point as last year's machines. I understand that Apple does this to make more money, but this type of thing basically prices some people out of being an Apple fan who could have previously afforded it. I know that Apple has always been premium, but they're moving from premium for the middle class to premium for the few. I think this especially hurts as the middle class in general keeps getting smaller and less affluent.

  • Apple SSD in Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro fixed to motherboard, not removable

I bought the 1 TB SSD. I would have bought the 2 TB, but I needed at least one kidney. These prices feel insulting to me, but I develop iOS apps, so I will continue to buy them. I wish people would get over the "Pro" designation. It means nothing more than "better" product. This is true for most products from most company. "Commerical" is usually how companies refer to things built for professional use. People are using this to complain about the lack of power on Apple's devices. I think that's a real complaint, especially for the 16 GB RAM limit, but this "Pro" thing is just semantics. Better to directly address the problem, which is that Apple is no longer making computers for power users.
