  • Apple, NeXT veteran Joanna Hoffman calls today's technology leaders 'remarkably ignorant'

Facebook is a medium to express oneself. If that expression is anger, it is not Facebook's fault. What she is suggesting is corporate censorship. She wants to pass final judgement over what someone says based on whether she agrees with it. Heck, I do not agree with a lot of stuff I read on Facebook. It is trash. But I am smart enough to separate the wheat from the chaff. It's a slippery slope. Not one I am willing to jump on.

I get what you're saying in that Facebook shouldn't be the one censoring things.

I think the real problem is that we, as humans, are inexplicably drawn to pain and anger, and Facebook's algorithms magnify that tendency in unhealthy ways. I suspect that Facebook tried to find a way to rein it in or refocus it, but could not, so they gave up. The fact is that as long as Facebook tries to "surface" things that interest people, it will "surface" divisive, angry topics. Because that's what draws people in. People crave being right and getting upset at all the wrong people.

  • Apple TV with A12X ready to go at any time, claims leaker

Hmm, not too excited about the chip upgrades, although less laggy is always nice. In particular, I'd like to see enough RAM so Apple can hold multiple Apps in memory so that I can switch between them with less wait. That's probably at least partly a code design issue, though.

The biggest thing for me is the remote. I just do not like it, especially compared to the TIVO remote that's comfortable and offers easy, fast access to all the functions without remembering Morse-code sequences (BTW . . . _ _ _ . . . does _not_ bring up the help menu ;-) I hope they find some way to accommodate people like me. I'd even accept paying some ridiculous add-on cost for a remote that's more TIVO-like.

  • Steve Wozniak says he may have been first coronavirus case in US [u]

I personally think my sister contacted it at CES (about 50,000 people from China) this year. 18 days after returning from Vegas, she got the worst case of the flu with serious respiratory issues. Because she was outside the (then) 14 day incubation period, it was “just the flu” ruled by the ER doctors. 6 weeks later she is still getting over it.

Shortly afterwards, I got a 4 day case of the flu which hit my muscles and joints something fierce. I was also at CES.

I strongly suspect my sister got corona virus. Me? I don’t know.

i think it is WAY under-reported.
You're describing a flu, and there's no way of knowing its source. You may just be one of the millions of people who get the flu every year. I had a severe flu four years ago much like yours, but it was just the ordinary flu, which of course kills tens of thousands every year. In fact, based on what we know, the major issue with isolating the coronavirus is that it's pretty mild in most cases.

In fact, I wonder if total flu deaths will actually be lower than expected this year because people are actually practicing decent sanitation. It's difficult to know, but nine times out of 10, things are better than the media reports. Of course, there's always the outlier that everyone points to.

  • Why Apple will move Macs to ARM, and what consumers get

Geez, there is a huge benefit to consumers, and it's battery life. It's like switching to a car that gets 10 times the miles per gallon, but still travels faster and farther. (It's not quite that good because the screen takes a lot of battery, but still, I'm really surprised this wasn't mentioned.

Wow, that's sudden. I wonder what happened. Power struggle? Illness? Something else?
