  • Alibaba researchers reportedly jailbreak iOS 11.2.1 on iPhone X

The jailbreaking community is so ridiculously small now.  One way or another it will be closed so for the time being I guess Alibaba is just claiming bragging rights.

  • Apple's recent software problems are bad, but shouldn't lead to knee-jerk personnel decisi...

I was always a die-hard defender of Apple's practices.  I'll be the first to hold their feet to the fire too.  This is probably the first year ever in Apple ownership that I've really noticed a decline in their OS quality.  I'm a software engineer of almost 30 years.  I also do iOS development too.  MacOS and iOS is still the best-in-class, even at it's current level.  Still... iOS11 on my iP6+ is abysmal.  First time every.  The occasional attempt at a phone call greets me with a system crash.  Response time and performance at times slows to a crawl.  Very unhappy.  AI even posted an questionable article a few weeks back that the degradation is actually just in our imagination which I found insulting to us seasoned veterans, especially software engineers.  I design software that not only must work right, but I do it with the intent that it runs at the exact same performance level, or better.  Apple failed miserably on this.  I'm not sure if they have a staffing problem or the quality of their iOS engineers is suffering.

My new 2-month old MacBook Pro with TouchBar (my 4th MBP) has an F4 key that mysteriously stops working when iTunes opens, requiring a log-out/login to reactivate it.  Watching a video on YouTube, Safari, or even clicking a Quicktime video will cause the F4 key to fail.  Minor you think?  Not if your a developer and your tools make extensive use of function keys.  Been working with Apple for months on this and this problem has been an issue since the first Touch Bar models in 2016!  It's the first MBP I've ever owned that makes me wish I had retuned it within the 2-week window.  Now I'm stuck with it.  I do have a workaround, but it's an embarrassment to Apple.

That same laptop crashed badly two days after unpacking when Apple pushed a MacOS update and updated my MBP while it was still encrypting the flash drive.  Completely hosed the machine, requiring a clean-install - recommended even by the Apple support tech as well.  Not my imagination.  These are real-world issues.

I still believe Apple products are the best in class.  Heck, if these problems were on Windows machines, I'd say pretty much I'm SOOL in getting support of any kind.  It does not negate my belief that whatever is going on with Apple in 2017 (or 2016), they are certainly getting sloppy on details.

  • Apple Supplemental Update for macOS High Sierra fixed Disk Utility, Keychain vulnerabiliti...

Do NOT install this update if your primary drive is still in the process of being encrypted!!

This update hosed my 3-day old MacBook Pro by refusing to install while the drive was still being encrypted.  It got stuck in a cycle of restarts that would not allow my back into my machine.  Even re-installing MacOS did not work.  The only way to get in was to completely erase the primary drive, and re-install MacOS from scratch.  This was the end-result after being on the phone with Apple support in vain in the hopes I could recover my machine without losing hours of setup I did the night before.

I was in a perfect storm of events as I just bought the laptop that still had Sierra installed, so I upgraded it to High Sierra, installed software, and shut the machine off (not giving it time to finish the encryption) and the next morning the update crashed my machine.

  • Parallels Desktop 13 for Mac gains APFS, HEVC, VR support in update

Awesome because VMware Inc. laid off most of its "Fusion" team and outsourced development to a different country last year.
It depends on who you believe.  I was very irate when I heard that rumor a year and a half ago.  I contacted VMware to give them a piece of my mind as I've been a VMware customer and Fusion user since the V4 days.  Surprisingly, I had a brief but interesting discussion with an employee there.

Now, "If" I believe this person, the layoff involved only the UI team, and NOT the core engineers.  So far, the chatter has died down since that rumor.  The updates to Fusion have been coming and have been consistent so - for now - I have no reason to dispute what VMware says.  Support still seems to be stellar, and the support I had with upgrading an old iMac was prompt and to the point.

I've been a VMware Fusion user since release V4 and I just upgraded both my Macs to Fusion 10 which is High Sierra compatible. It works great, and is just as polished as I expect it to be.  I'm a happy customer.  I still prefer Fusion over Parallels.

  • APFS in High Sierra causing problems for Unity Engine, Cities: Skylines, Civilization V, m...

IMHO this is another red flag of concern about APFS reliability. The tolerance for bugs in such a critical operating system component should be as close to zero as humanly possible.
For sure... even though my 2009 iMac upgraded just fine to High Sierra and been running it trouble free since it became official, it took a big dump when attempted to do a clean install last night on it.  It was unable to create an APFS boot volume during the MacOS reinstall..

First time I've ever had a problem with an OS install by Apple.  Ever.  I didn't hear any problems (outside of beta) about doing clean-installs with High Sierra, but warning to others not to do it just yet.  It could be a problem specific to my machine/configuration but those considering it should wait.  Obviously, Apple missed the QC train here.

    Attempting a work-around... crossing fingers.
