  • Apple all-in on struggling Matter, to the detriment of HomeKit Accessory Protocol

the smart home is a myth
There's plenty of room for improvement, but it's hardly still at the point of a myth.

I currently have dozens of smart devices that in general all work together: Smartphones, Chromebook, security cameras both indoor and out, several smoke and monoxide detectors, HDTV's, multiroom sound system, multiple thermostats, multiple lights, "Find My" trackers, mesh internet system, earbuds, display hubs, temperature sensors, smartwatch, media streaming devices, pod speakers, security system, power outlets....

My smart home is pretty well stocked at the moment. My biggest complaint is the reliability still isn't where it needs to be. Turning on/off the kitchen lights should be nearly as consistent as walking over to the switchplate, but it isn't. Failures happen as much as 10% of the time or thereabouts ( I don't actually keep a record), which is enough for many consumers to decide it's not yet worth the investment.

I believe that this is the point quakerotis is making. In over 30 years, there isn’t a more reliable way to control your house than with regular light switches, thermostats, outlets, and bulbs. From the X10 days of the early 80’s to now, reliability kills the trust of a user to try it.

I have grown mine from a few simple Hue lights 13 years ago, to switches, thermostats, outlet connections and most of my lights in the house, along with a Hoobs box, and when Homekit takes a shit, I have to spend a couple of hours redoing everything.   iOS 17 has made Homekit much, much worse and I’m ready for the new version that Craig has been working with for the past few years integrating Apple Intelligence into it, and making changes like being able to manually select your home hub.

My fingers have been crossed for so long I think they’re stuck.

  • Child safety watchdog accuses Apple of hiding real CSAM figures

This is chalk and cheese. Facebook and Google both have social media platforms hosting user content for consumption by others. Apple does not. Where is the recognition of that rather significant difference in the “findings“?
More importantly, what has been done about the findings? Were there investigations and what was the result? How many of those numbers were actual child abuse images and how many of those resulted in actions from law enforcement? What does NCMEC actually do and have done about this issue in general?

  • Epic Games Store isn't on the EU App Store yet because of some user interface buttons

Apple is taking issue with button designs... that they are "too similar"?

Isn't that the very essence of Human Interface Guidelines... that the interface -should- be consistent from one app to the next?

Not if they appear to be coming from Apple and not from Epic. Because Epic wanted its own store, it HAS to differentiate itself from Apple’s App Store, otherwise it COULD be construed that this purchase is going thru Apple. They don’t want to be liable for any billing issues or fraud that could happen using a non-Apple App Store.

I’d love to see intel regain the process lead and win apples foundry business.
Why? Intel was always slow to improve their products. They always run hot as well.
Tell that to Steve Jobs circa 2005.

Intel had a couple of CEOs make very bad decisions in the decade or so after Apple switched to Intel. But before then, Intel was the world leader in logic chip manufacturing.

Maybe you’re the kind of person who wants America to fail, but I want to see a once great American company rise again.
Intel had tremendous ego and helped kill the PPC architecture. Steve knew Andy Grove and was a friend, but professionally, he didn’t think Intel processors were appropriate to put into Macs. It was IBM’s constant delays of faster processors that forced Steve into using Intel.

The latest smear campaign by Intel happened when Apple started using its ARM based processors showed that if Apple didn’t change its course, Intel would go scorched earth and destroy whatever goodwill that was created when Steve went all in with Intel.

They deserve to be kicked to the bottom until they change their tune.

It doesn’t surprise me there’s a culture clash in Arizona, especially in today’s rancid political environment. A decade ago we would have welcomed TSMC like we have welcomed Japanese automakers. Not any more and it’s not TSMC’s fault.
Arizona has always been a pain to do anything. We are a crooked state that started as an outlaws hideaway. TSMC isn’t grea$ing enough to get things done. Other companies have been able to build their plants here like Sumitomo.
