  • Microsoft's 'bug chicks' praise Windows 10, diss Macs in new ad campaign

What's amazing about ads like this, is that MS is comparing itself against a minority platform. What is it worldwide, something like 90% MS to less than 10% for Apple? Or isn't marketshare all that important any longer?
There is no-one else to compare with, really. Linux? Playstation OS? :)

I'm not saying this is good thing - in fact, I'd prefer OSX to have larger market share, and AmigaOS to have kept growing since late '80 and early '90 and is viable option today, both software and hardware wise. TOS/GEM, too; but they aren't. OSX is really the only other platform out there right now, much as laptops and desktops are considered.

Eventually, it is not only MS fault that no-one else managed to compete on market share terms.

WOW! Really Microshaft?! Ummmm , Apple did this Mac Vs. PC thing like 15 years ago! Has microshaft even created their own hardware other than a ghetto phone, and Surface tablet. When will Micorshaft compare laptop to laptop ? Oh that's right, they don't have one except for Surface of my bawls convertible tablet. Compare desktop to desktop? Ooops, I've NEVER seen a MS desktop. EVER...... Nice try microshaft, keep riding apple's coattails!
Who's that Micorshaft you keep babbling about?

Please provide me with a list of manufacturers and the actual reported sales numbers (or shipments if you wish) for each.

Instead f shouting about how you don't like a source because it disagrees with you, do you have a source to counter them?
    Of course he does. Faith.

Kidding... or am I. While I'm completely OK with questioning IDC or any other source in particular... well, I'm OK with questioning that source that claims that much iOS devices in active use. My two old iPhones 3Gs are being turned on on occasion, and my mom sometimes still turns on her old original iPad and first gen iPad Mini. They might show somewhere as active devices, but that might be a bit misguiding, IMHO.

I'm wondering if iOS devices are not being kept around longer even when people upgrade - maybe due to stronger emotional attachment, or simple fact that they were expensive in a first place (compared to cheap Android phones and tablets that could be permanently discarded more often than not, when owners upgrade). After all, I'm keeping my old 3Gs - I've purchased them out of contract and they were both NZ$1300+, it just feels wrong to drop them into garbage bin.

  • Bill Gates says he doesn't back FBI in case vs. Apple, encourages more discussion

I think that the fact that this guy "quit" Microsoft essentially negates any credibility he may still have regarding this issue.
The man has done more in the world than most people will ever do in their entire lives. He passed the responsibility to others to run a company as he and his wife went off and did other things. Others would see that as retirement with a nest egg of 75 billion dollars, yet you call it "quitting."
Because haters gonna hate. It works in both directions, to be honest.

  • Microsoft rep pans iPad Pro, says Apple's tablet is 'always going to be a companion device'

1000 times more people that want to do some cheap photo effects or basic design. Microsoft is right you can't run Photoshop on the iPad Pro but for the casual user you probably going to save a lot more money buying apps from the Apps Store than full fledged software packages.

    Exactly right!

The iPad Pro is "good enough" for most people.  For anybody else with their professional edge use cases, there is the Mac.
iPad Air is already good for most people tablet needs. Pro does need to carve deeper into more serious part of computing, and offer apps that are comparable (or the same) with those people use for work. Without such software, Pro is just larger and faster iPad Air right now... but not many existing apps will really take advantage of that speed increase.

The other thing is... Apple probably doesn't really want iPad Pro to discourage people from buying Mac (in any form). As such, they want iPPro to be companion device. More capable one, but still companion device. I think that makes sense.

What is interesting for me is Microsoft's position. On one side, they don't have anything but Surface, so they can merge, replace, convert or do anything else they want to when it comes to tablet/laptop/computer formula. However, I'd expect they don't want to alienate OEMs too much, so they have to be somewhat diplomatic. Maybe that's why Surface is going only for higher-end, expensive convertible devices that are not atractive to "purists" who want only laptop or only tablet, without any convertibility sacrifices. Surface Pro is really not too bad, but Surface Book is quite outrageous, price wise.
