  • John Giannandrea out as Siri chief, Apple Vision Pro lead in

Tim’s ai, headset, and car haven’t panned out so far.

Would love to see a return to the days of Apple not releasing something until it’s 100% ready and captivating. I’ll give Cook’s car a pass since it was never officially announced.

Even the watch was closely guarded. And it was a success when it finally launched. A return to form in that regard would be most welcome.

No more public experiments and betas please.
I'll never understand what people mean when they say this other than "I don't like it so it didn't pan out." By what metrics are you measuring the panning?

Other than delaying one feature, Apple Intelligence is doing fine. Apple didn't promise a sentient machine like others in the space did. Is that a bad thing? Them delaying something that isn't ready instead of releasing it anyway is exactly what you're asking Apple to do, yet you're criticizing them for it.

And unless you know something about how Apple Vision Pro has done so far and Apple's expectation for the product, there's no way of knowing "how it panned out." It's been pretty awesome from my perspective.
Right you are. Now back to making your emojis or whatever emoji related feature Apple brought to its “intelligence”

  • Everyone is a loser in the Apple Intelligence race

“Everyone” is not a loser in the Apple Intelligence race. Mostly because the only one in that race is Apple. And they are more like runners in a Monty Python sketch (silly walks or maybe Philosophers playing soccer?) Microsoft with their heavy AI investments, Google and Meta are all in a totally different race. This feels more like a Zune prototype vs iPhone 16 race where they don’t belong in the same sentence. Mm, same article. But hey at least we have Tim’s Folly (the goggles), more emojis, and a slightly faster chip that is “amazing”.

  • Apple confirms that Apple Intelligence Siri features are taking longer than expected

As someone who is a frequent critic of Apple on these forums you might think I would be happy to see that my recent post on Apple’s failure to deliver new products was accurate. But I am not. I have been around here for a long time when Apple was the underdog against companies like Microsoft, RIM etc. But it is painful to watch. Apple needs a creative leader, a risk taker, an innovator, someone who can inspire and motivate teams to actually deliver new products and services people want on reasonable timelines that can then be turned over to Cook to iterate as much profit from as he can over ten or twenty years. It is impossible for one person to do all these things. Even Jobs realized he couldn’t do it all and brought in people like Cook. The board should consolidate innovation under a new leader brought in from the outside, protect them operationally and move business operations under Cook (or whoever succeeds him). And no, not Ivey. Innovation for him just meant “thinner”. We need the next Altman who is working away at delivering the next big thing. Musk and Zuck need not apply either having seemingly fallen into the same iteration trap, over promising and not delivering.

  • Siri may only get minor Apple Intelligence improvements before iOS 19

It goes far beyond Siri. Apple has a delivery problem under Cook. He has iterated the company to new financial heights but with a massive workforce and wealth, Apple can’t deliver new product that people want. They are great at chip speed increases, new cameras and all things emoji. But the car, new health features in the watch, social media (Ping?), cloud, VR, AI, new designs and form factors, new products etc. just can’t capture the public. If they really have spent 7 years on AI then they should be fired! Just look to Chinese companies to see how they are delivering new products quickly. It is not just Apple though - Tesla, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and maybe even Nvidia and Microsoft are all iterating not creating new exciting products that capture the public’s imaginations. But at least Amazon is delivering Alexa 2 which seems to be a big jump over v1 and Siri. Let’s do shots in how many times Cook says “amazing” and “exciting” as they roll out another tired launch video shot on iPhone + a million dollars worth of ad ons! /s

  • Apple turns off data protection in the UK rather than comply with backdoor mandate

    Scot1 said:
I’m not a lawyer, of course, but what’s the difference between getting a court ordered warrant to enter someone’s home or workplace if they are under investigation for bad acts against the population or the government and doing the same thing to investigate same on someone’s phone?
How do you find a balance between keeping people safe and respecting the rights of the individual?

I thought that’s what the courts were supposed to do and so having a back channel to go into someone’s phone under the authority of the courts isn’t such a bad idea is it? I mean the whole premises if you’re not doing something wrong…
Entering a physical location only affects that location. Having a law that allows the UK to enter any Apple users data affects us all. And opens our data not just to the UK but other governments who will demand the same thing and of
course hackers who will find a way in. I never bothered about encryption as I have nothing to hide till suddenly loyalty to one politician and tech titan become a real issue. If you are a racial minority, woman, gay / trans say in the military, drive past an abortion clinic in California or New York and Texas or Florida wants that data now it suddenly becomes a much bigger concern. If you are a dissident or journalist it is an even bigger problem not just in Iran but even the U.S. as a recent decision regarding AP access has shown.
