First of all, it is not “the heir apparent”, it is the actual replacement of the previous phone. Secondly, it is not a massive rebranding of the specifications. It is a total replacement of the previous SE model. It will require its own new branding campaign. As Cook said it is a new member to the family. Here is my first child and here is my rebranded second child …!

Unless it is a chip swap and camera bump, Apple seems incapable of delivering anything in any sort of a reasonable time frame. Apple Watch Ultra they were able to come up with a new color and not even a better chip. The one product they did “rush” (after years of development) seems to be a bit of a failure necessitating a move to third parties to clear out their inventory of goggles. Apple “Intelligence” that they have been working on for 7 years I think Cook said has had a faltering rollout too. TL:DR it is no surprise that they will take years and years more work on this before it finally, if ever, sees the light of day. 

Other than Apple fanatics, tech nerds and some very early niche adopters (say to explore the potential for use in say surgery etc) who is buying these? And really, why? The money and man hours spent on this have sidelined Apple from areas like AI, cloud or just putting out iPhones with more innovation than a faster chip and updated camera. Cook lacks Jobs ability to come up with what the masses really want (do we really need an AI emoji creator or Siri that still doesn’t work properly or iteration X to the n-th degree watch or this monstrosity strapped to our heads all day?). Nor does he have the charisma to pull it off. He has been brilliants for shareholders though really milking the iPhone of every last drop. But ask all the large companies across history how that has worked out for them over time!
