  • EU hits back at Apple withholding Apple Intelligence from the region

The EU is an extortion racket. Change my mind.
The US is a violent force destabilising peace across the world to suit its own ends. Change my mind.

So to summarize several responses, as long as your Apple device works, great, but if it breaks, Apple is under no obligation to make it possible, easy or inexpensive to repair.

That pretty much is my point. Everthing breaks - that's life. Less susceptable to breakage doesn't mean impervious and if it breaks and can't be repaired it becomes e-waste.

I believe Apple could make different design choices that prioritized longevity AND repairabilty. I believe it is a false choice to say one OR the other, especailly when their products are so notoriously difficult to repair.  There are any number article and videos from experienced and/or authorized Apple technicians that demonstrate this. (iFixit, Hugh Jeffries, etc)

Apple could make repairs and parts less expensive and easy to obtain for older deivces.  Apple could make it easier to scavenge parts from other damaged devices rather than chip locking them or provide a method to unlock the parts for salvage so repair shops can reuse them.

I think the reason they don't do any of this is that they are not fianacially repsonible for the full life cycle of their products and the impact of the waste they create.

My comment on soldered RAM and soldered or proprietary SSDs was really aimed at desktops & laptops, not phones. Here, tech advances produce faster, cheaper and more durable options in the years after a laptop/desktop is manufuctured. Upgradeability can add years to the usable service life.  It is only since 2017 that Apple made this impossible.  And certainly phones could do with upgradable storage (micro SD?), though RAM might be trickier. (size, power consumption, etc)

I’ve owned an original iPod and three iPod touches - 2nd, 5th and 6th gen. The original iPod (with a hard disk) kept working mostly but became a bit erratic after about 3 years and I did drop it out of a loft and the central button, click wheel and spring popped out. I fitted them back in but it was never quite right after that! I’ve also owned two iPhones and four iPads (original, iPad Air 2nd gen and 2 iPad Pros). None have ever been used or kept in cases. None of them have ever broken, malfunctioned or required repair.

Thanks, but I’ll take Apple’s approach any day rather than making my devices easier/cheaper to fix if they break.

Hopefully that won’t effect us here in England
    Thank god for Brexit.
I hope England isn’t grouped with “Europe” anyway. British tech people need to lobby Apple to make sure this is understood.
Too late, by several hundred if not a thousand years!

England is part of the UK … which is in Europe. We are very regrettably no longer in the EU but of course still have to abide by their rules to sell to them even though, unlike prior to 2016 when we were actually involved in drafting them.

Lobbying Apple? Apple, being a smart global company, are well aware we are not in the EU which is why the multiple browser choices in 17.5 and the like never appeared for me during my OS updates.

Fantastic news. Anything Apple can do to screw the EU is fine by me. At least we’ll get all the features in the UK.

    Oh dear.

Yep, all the EU features like a single market, customs union, free movement, no roaming charges, being part of multiple cross-country organisations and initiatives. No, wait. We lost all those, and more, when we left. Never mind though ‘cos if Apple can stick it to the EU then who cares?

How utterly dare anybody tell an American company what to do. The very idea.
