Power press: Fixes for Apple's oddly-placed Mac mini button
I have an iMac. The power button is big and on the back, easily reachable with my left hand. The only time I have used it in the last few years is after we’ve had a power cut to start the iMac! As there’s a restart after power failure option (I think) I could even avoid that incredibly onerous task if I wanted, but as our power cuts tend to come in bursts I prefer to leave that feature off.
This entire utter non-issue boggles my mind that people can get so worked up by something utterly irrelevant. Good on Apple, for making a surprising but very sensible design choice. -
Apple's AirPods Pro 2's impressive hearing test launch date confirmed
“Every reviewer so far has praised the effectiveness of the hearing test, but most also have some criticisms. The test itself requires the wearer to be in a quiet place and some workers struggled to find one quiet enough.”I mean, REALLY? Damn it, why doesn’t Apple let us use their anechoic chamber or provide really quiet places where we can set it up. Cheapskates! -
UK reconsidering USB-C charger mandate, after everyone else has already shifted
mike1 said:This is all well and good until something better is developed and all manufacturers are stuck using the old version because the EU mandated a specific connector. Can't wait until the rest of the world moves on to something better/faster/smaller/cheaper and the EU countries are stuck with this.
As we’ve said in the computer business for years “The great thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from”. Why are manufacturers “stuck”? Would the EU never change and demand USB-C until the end of time, regardless?
It sounds as though you’d prefer a world of top tech connectors like Lightning, USB-C, USB-A, those tiny USB connectors and the other tiny USB connectors that aren’t quite the same size as the other tiny ones where the best tech is what you get until next year when someone decides the best tech is now something different! Personally, I’d prefer a single connector on my wall plug and the minimum number of cables that allows me to charge my iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, 3rd party hardware like keyboards and other rechargeable speakers, and the same kind of connectors for data.
Electronic waste has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. With 62 million metric tons generated across the world in 2022, the volume of discarded electronic material has nearly doubled since 2010. Do you want to add to that, or reduce it?

Apple's ultra-thin OLED iPad Pro fails to spark sales surge
I love my M4 iPad Pro which replaced my previous 6 year old 2018 version which was still working fine. My iPad is my main computer so I wanted the amazing screen (and it is), more storage and ability to run Apple Intelligence, so here I am.
But, if I didn’t have an iMac I don’t know how keen I’d be. I’m in a choir and get sent mp3 rehearsal parts, try adding those to Apple Music on an iPhone or iPad to listen to when out and about, it’s not possible as you need a Mac. It’s hardly a “Pro” feature! It’s lots of silly niggles like this that tarnish using the iPad at times. When an Intel Mac from 10 years ago can add a sound file to your music library but a brand new M4 powered iPad PRO can’t it does make you wonder … -
iPhone users delay upgrades as Android owners are upgrading often for newer tech
grandact73 said:Android phone manufacturers have vastly surpassed Apple in terms of innovation and offerings. What is this vast innovation of which you speak?
I bought an iPhone 12mini at release and it’s still my only phone. It’s running ios18 very nicely and if I change it then it will only be for a larger capacity iPhone 13mini. The only feature I’d really like from the new phones is the Camera button but I can live without it.Also it helps that I’m not the kind of person to upgrade for the sake of a new model every year. I’ve just bought an M4 iPad Pro to replace the previous model I’d had for 6 years and if it wasn’t for Apple Intelligence and the HDR screen (which is amazing) I would still be using the older model. Apple kit is beautifully made and just lasts and lasts.
