  • Apple makes room for new Macs by rethinking retail Vision Pro demo stations

Apple needs to rethink the vision pro.

    Back to the drawing board.
AVP also isn't intended for the masses. It's more of an experiment for Apple that they can improve little by little, similar to what they did with the iPhone which was also an experiment at first. So just because it isn't sold in mass quantities doesn't mean it's a failure. It's a future product for Apple and could do very well in the coming years as they release newer ones.

It's more like AVP doesn't need to take up so much space anymore. There's no need to take up a good portion of the store for demo's now because it's simply not needed. It can now just have its space on a counter like any other Apple product.

  • New Mac mini has a slotted & removable SSD -- but don't expect upgrades

I don't think user upgradeable for storage anyway. This was same for Mac Studio.
Apple coded each storage for specific unit so user can't upgrade. Unless Apple change the way.
Except that, as the hacker community discovered, if you use new (that is, never-been-written) flash chips, you can use Apple's Configurator 2 utility to initialize them and install macOS.  This will set up the cryptographic pairing.  You can't wipe used flash modules (e.g. to move storage from one Mac to another), but it does means that upgrades are possible.

So far, we've just seen some people making bare circuit boards and you need the microsoldering skills necessary to attach new flash chips to those boards, but I think it's just a matter of time before someone starts selling boards with chips pre-installed.  So even if end-user upgrades won't be practical, I think we will soon see independent repair shops that can do it.
The upgradable SSD is a moot point anyways. 99.9% of owners will never upgrade it nor care to.

  • Mac mini shows Apple can be low cost -- it just doesn't often want to

Apple's been upfront about that. They've stated before they're not in a race to the bottom and they will never try to compete on price. When you get stuck in that mentality your products go straight to the shitter.

So much for the lifetime licenses.
Doesn't mean Apple wouldn't include this into macOS and iOS in the future. It may not be called Pixelmator but it could take the tech and make its own app, or include into something like Preview.

  • Apple stuck the Mac mini power button on the bottom

Asinine. This is absolutely the WORST place you could possibly put the power button on a DESKTOP computer.
Inconvenient from a traditional mindset, but nowadays a power button doesn't get much use..
I hit the power button on my Mini EVERY DAMNED MORNING.
Why on earth would you shut your Mac down everyday? I don't even shut my MacBook Pro down. It's just not necessary at all.
