  • Apple releases macOS Monterey 12.4 to the public

Anybody else think 2.2GB for an update that doesn't really add any features seems a bit much?

I mean, that's only slightly smaller than the entire current Xubuntu OS release, for what is ultimately a minor patch.  I've got clients who still have 12 megabit DSL connections, patches like this are a pain for them.
It's 2022...get out of 2003 with real internet. Even my dad who lives out in east jesus has 100mbps down and 20-30mbps up.

Wow former engineer this is very very expensive 1. To ship 2. Good luck putting it all back together. Also this compromises the whole water proofing dust proofing.
Yep and just wait until people bring their Apple product into the Apple Store because they tried to fix it and broke it or they fixed it half-ass and now Apple should replace/fix it for free! Just wait...just wait! It's gonna happen and somehow a class-action lawsuit will ensue.

    “ front-facing ports”

Finally Apple actually put usability ahead of aesthetics!

This is what you get when Jony Ive isn't working at Apple anymore. He's gotta be the main culprit of everything form over function. He cared too much about how a product looked instead of what it could do. He seemed to be perfectly okay with designing something that had limitations just so it could look good in his eyes so marketing had to put out all this BS about how people don't want ports, people care how thin a product is, etc. Hopefully this trend continues as Apple redesigns its product. We've seen both the MacBook Pro and now the Mac Studio be designed for actual use and it still looks pretty good. You can definitely tell its still an Apple product.

  • The Mac Studio isn't the xMac, but it's the closest we've ever been

This is basically what the iMac Pro was when it came out: a stopgap for those who truly could not wait for apple to finish the Mac Pro.

The new big boy iMac Pro or whatever it’s called is not ready in 2022 and neither is the Mac Pro. So this will fill in the gap.

The only issue is the price. For something that doesn’t come with a screen, the max version seems like a really crappy price proposition compared to MacBook Pro. And the ultra, though powerful, has ridiculous upgrade prices for those who don't want the binned/handicapped chip. Starting at FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS is something we’d expect of an m1 ultra iMac Pro - screen included.

This mini tower of power is certainly awesome, but it’s not looking great at the price. Here Apple has full control of its hardware assets and the price somehow gets worse than with Intel. Ouch.

27” being the only size for the display is a bit of a letdown as well. And the 5k resolution is ok. But nothing special. Some of us have had 27” iMac 5ks for 7 years already.

Hopefully this means that a monster iMac 27” or hopefully larger is still on the way and hopefully it doesn’t start at $5,000 dollars.
Honestly, I don't think an iMac Pro really needs to exist anymore. This pretty much covers it and while yes its more expensive I think the benefits outweigh the extra price (see below). I think this is the iMac Pro replacement.

This is not comparable to a MacBook Pro. Not sure why you'd even try to compare the two.

You can also just go out and get whatever display you want. Apple isn't forcing you to get their display. If you want something cheaper then you can get that, if you wanted something more expensive such as the XDR Display then you can get that. It gives you more choices in the end. Also, if you do get the Apple display and want to replace the Mac later on you don't have to buy the display all over again every time. Or, if the display shits the bed you don't have to lose the entire Mac to get a fix. Just connect up a different display.

I do believe Apple will still make a 27" consumer level iMac even if it comes later this year after the new Mac Pro, but it won't be designed nor marketed as a Pro level iMac.

  • Apple's Mac Studio launches with new M1 Ultra chip in a compact package

At the end when he said we have one more but that’s for another day and said the Mac Pro… so this studio isn’t going to be their biggest powerhouse but merely a stepping stone.. What the hell will the new Mac Pro be packed with??
PCIe expansion, DIMM slots, support for ECC memory, and maybe 4 M1 Maxes.
I doubt the next Mac Pro will include user replaceable RAM, but rather maybe just unified ECC RAM. The days of replacing your RAM is gone. You buy all you can afford. That's the one thing I would increase as much as you can afford when spec'ing any Apple Silicon Mac out.  PCIe expansion I can see yes. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an M2 CPU/GPU in the new Mac Pro. You can always add more storage with TB4 drives if you really needed it. For an general user or even company I doubt they'd even care to replace the RAM anyways.
