  • Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute are Apple's answer to generative AI

It’s probably not quite right to say that most users will be locked out from the benefits of AI. I speculate that a subset of the on-device features will come to models prior to the iPhone 15, limited to non-generative technologies which require more processing power. I guess we will learn more closer to release as Apple tests individual features on different phone models to determine what can run successfully.

But more interesting to me is using Apple silicon in the data centres. This is very strategic. They are going to invest in their own AI processors (I’m sure these will be custom chips, not M series models). This is a two-way win. They invest in their own AI design technology which avoids funding Nvidia as a competitor, and builds expertise in neural processing units they can apply to future M series chips. I can’t think of a competitor which will gain this level of vertical expertise. A strategic advantage if they get it right.

  • WWDC unlikely to see debuts of any new hardware at all

I suppose the M4 is too new (and in the wrong hardware!) for anyone to know whether it has addressed the GoFetch problem. M3 has a partial fix. I can’t help but think that Apple is moving quickly to M3 (think about how quickly they started upgrading MacBook Air to M3) and M4 in order to limit the installed base of M1 and M2 as well as satisfy security-conscious enterprise customers.

  • AI computer showdown - MacBook Air vs. Microsoft Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC

Given the Surface has a fan, why compare it to the MacBook Airs rather than the MacBook Pros?

  • Your next iPhone could be the iPad mini - iPhone 15 vs iPad mini showdown

The mini 4 screen size was great. I still have mine because the new mini has too small a screen for browsing YouTube in landscape.

  • Mac Pro and Mac Studio refreshes may wait till 2025

Of course Apple had a roadmap all along!

i hypothesise that the M1 and M2 Ultras existed only because of the capabilities of silicon production at the time. M3, M4 and beyond are showing very good performance at lower power consumptions and perhaps an M4 in a chassis with active cooling can do much better than we’ve just seen in the new iPad Pro.

Missing in action is an upgraded Mac mini and I also wonder if, equipped with an M4 with active cooling, it might outperform the current Studio, obsoleting the Studio.

All pure speculation of course, looking forward to seeing what is really revealed at WWDC.
