  • Apple users are keeping their iPads for a very long time

Still using my iPad mini 4. It does what I need of it well. Battery life is a little shorter but still acceptable for my media tablet use. Web pages are a bit slower due to unnecessary complexity, but they still render fine. I’m holding out on a change as this form factor is great for me; the newer mini is too small and a baby full iPad is too inconvenient for my usage.

  • The history -- and triumph -- of Arm and Apple Silicon

Strange how this article spends no thought on the GPU design yet this is where the real computational horsepower and efficiency has shifted. Nothing runs as hot as an NVIDIA graphics card yet the M series GPUs sip power. Apple abandoned their own GPU design and went back to Imagination Technologies. So why no mention here?

  • Does Apple's platform need to be opened up?

It is a common mistake to assert that Apple’s iPhone prices are inflated. Taking into account all the functionality they fold together (saving the consumer from buying separate devices) they are value priced. The DoJ suit will fail on this basic premise - unless Apple hires completely incompetent lawyers.

  • Apple in talks to license Google Gemini AI for iPhones

Talks would be aimed at establishing whether Apple can move better and faster with its own LLM technology, Open AI, or Google. They are under tremendous competitive pressure versus every other tech company and have to accelerate. This is what you do. They bought Beats to get into streaming faster. They turned on a dime to use Imagination Tech for their new GPUs (after very publicly dropping them). I see no hand-wringing here, just exploring all options to move much faster. Likewise they moved the (supposed) car team engineers into other products, I would guess likewise to shore up their AI acceleration efforts in those the immediate future.

  • EU officials are not happy with how Apple is handling Progressive Web Apps

Lost in all this is that Apple blew open the telcos walled garden model for “smart” phones (Jobs: not so smart) when the iPhone launched. Remember WAP? Yeah. Betcha don’t and nor does the EU Commission by the sounds of things. I’m sure these same telcos at MWC2024 are chomping at the bit to wrest back power with a catchily named Open Gateway. And like a lot of “open” named stuff it will be a Trojan horse back into their market dominance and profitability model.

But I digress. Probably the reason Apple won’t want progressive apps without further platform changes is that they can’t yet enforce code signing. Perhaps, too, that they can’t audit what has been installed and therefore developer fees owed. With more work these are presumably solvable problems. Just need time and the deadline is here.
