You don’t think that evolving technical standards and regulatory approval cycles - out of Apple’s direct control - would make it smarter to keep the modem separate? 

Smart move by Apple to charge customers $599 to perform field validation testing of their first generation cellular modem! Of course it will be launching in all those additional languages in April because they need to test the new modem in as many markets with as many carriers as possible before the iPhone 17 launch in September. I’m not being cynical about this, I think it is an excellent strategy; switching to an in-house mode is a very big risk. 

An upgrade of anything doesn’t sound like a new member of the family. The graphic gains a halo and the music sounds like an elaborate chime. I’m leaning towards a new product such as an Apple doorbell linked to your phone or a home hub - or both!

This would be surprising, considering the space constraints inside an iPhone. I’m more inclined to think that it’s somehow related to switching to Apple modems giving other design considerations that we don’t yet understand.

I’ve been quite alarmed at the proprietary and confidential details in Linked In profiles of some former colleagues and their reach-outs for hiring. Any company has every reason to care about what employees put out in public about their work.
