  • Plugable's Thunderbolt 4 Hub offers a 'pure USB-C' design

    1. Finally!
    2. Too expensive!
    3. Not enough ports!

  • United States & European Union are going to team up to take down big tech

I just hope that this is for the stated reasons and not something else. It would be very bad if governments will end up stifling innovation in service of "fairness". It would be the worst thing imaginable if governments are reigning in technological advancements so they can control it themselves. Note to Apple: If you like having control over what users do with their devices, how would you feel if governments applied the same control to you? This is not a rhetorical question.

  • EU proposing USB-C smartphone charger standard

Considering that USB C is 20 to 40 times faster than Lightning, Apple users should be pretty happy about this ruling. Apple constantly markets the speed of their processors but never mention how dreadfully slow and outdated their iPhone connectors are compared to the competition. The reason why Apple insists on keeping Lightning on their phones is not technical. It is due to greed and the insane need to control everything users can do with their devices. If an iPhone had a USB C drive, users could demand to (gasp) plug a fast SSD into them for backups or many other things that Apple would frown upon.

  • In leaked memo, Tim Cook says leakers do not belong inside Apple

Security: You are doing it wrong. None of Apple's oppressive security is actually working. We knew exactly what the the new iPhone 13 looked like months ago just like we did with the iPhone 12 and every other iPhone since Tim Cook has been CEO. We knew about the 120Hz screen refresh rate, the new camera features, the 1TB storage option and just about every other new feature that was announced. This information appears to have leaked from overseas manufacturers. Apple's reaction is to crack down on its US employees by adding still more layers of security that only serve to make their jobs more difficult. Look at the recent patch that failed to actually fix the security vulnerability as it was intended. You have to wonder if that would have happened if employees on different teams could just talk to each about the issues?

  • Tim Cook talks the need for privacy and exciting AI, AR

From the very beginning, one of the best aspects of VR was that it encouraged developers to try new things. The early demos/experiments included walking out along a plank high on a sky scraper, experiencing a scene from a famous anime, and a Nintendo Game Cube emulator. See the problem? Apple's highly restrictive nature will not tolerate this kind of reckless creativity. They must control the fun!

AR/VR with an Apple App Store will be like Apple TV. I have heard it said that there is just something a bit off about Apple TV. It is like Apple is watching over the shoulders of the producers making little "suggestions" about things to avoid. It is why there will never be a show like Breaking Bad on the network. Want to be "edgy" then have a character swear a lot. That's edgy, right? Discuss socially sensitive issues? Not a chance.

Apple's need to control everything hurts everyone including customers and developers but most of all it hurts Apple. If Apple wants to get into TV and AR and other new highly expressive forms of entertainment, it needs to let go. Let the creative people do what they want even if you feel in your bones it is a mistake. Ban apps or shows after they have gone off the rails if you have no choice but give them a chance to succeed. No one can predict which creative, edgy, distasteful, disruptive media will be the next big thing.
