  • Tested: Mac Studio with M1 Max vs. Mac Studio with M1 Ultra

Does anyone else think that paying $400 for 32GB of RAM or $200 for 512GB of SSD space is a bit expensive? Like perhaps four times what the parts should cost? I guess we will just have to upgrade them our... oh snap!

  • Apple's Mac Studio launches with new M1 Ultra chip in a compact package

    What's missing?
No upgradeability. At all. None. Zero. Nada.
No way to upgrade the RAM, SSD or any other components.
What you get is what you get. Forever. You are welcome.
Not even a M.2 slot for when the built in SSD seems very slow and small two years from now.

Those GPU speed/power charts were missing the name of the discrete GPUs they used for comparison. The charts shown when the M1 Pro and Max when the MacBook Pro was released ended up being very misleading. How exactly does the M1 Ultra stack up to a RTX 3090 when ray tracing in Blender? Who knows? Guess we have to wait for a real review to find out. We do know that that the M1 Max hash rate is around 10.7 MH/s while a 3090 gets 121 MH/s so even if the M1 Ultra is twice as fast, it is still 1/6th the speed of the 3090.

  • Over 6.5 million terabytes of flash storage ruined because of contamination at factory

Poor Petabyte. Never had a chance. It sounds like we are skipping it and going straight to the Exabyte.
Many years ago at a tech trade show there was an asian company at the front of the hall proudly showing of their robotic hard drive loading system with over one Petabyte of storage. They named the thing the "Petafile". I kid you not. I bet they wondered why they were getting all the smirks and snickers as people walked by.
And now you know the rest of the story.

  • Your child can and will dial 911 on an old Apple Watch

I would have loved an Apple Watch at that age. It's really too bad that Apple hates this kind of recycling. They love the kind that destroys old devices. This is why it would be a really good idea to allow people to do whatever they want with the devices they own. Someone could create an alternate version of Watch OS for toddlers that allows them to tap on pictures and learn things in the process without risking calls to 911. Apple will say that this is a huge security risk, but is it really?

  • Apple tech could create invisible input areas on bezels to replace buttons

In general, invisible buttons are a poor UI decision. The reason is that it complicates the use of a device for new users and those with cognitive disabilities. My almost 90 year old mother would be at a complete loss when told to press the home button and there is no home button. A better way to go would be to have the ability to detect when the user's fingers are close to the button (proximity sensing) and then make the button visible so they can see what they are about to tap on.
