Craig Federighi blasts Mac security to prop up iOS App Store
There is a famous science fiction story called "The Humanoid Touch" by Jack Williamson in which millions of well meaning androids land on Earth and smother all humans with care. They make humans so safe that they are incapable of doing anything that involves even the smallest amount of risk. This is what Craig Federighi wants to do for Mac users. I have been using MacOS for decades now and have never had a serious problem with malware of any kind but in Craig's mind there is still a tiny chance I could download a bad app and so keeps adding layer after layer of security which serves mainly to break the apps I need to do my job. I am a software developer. There are exactly zero software development apps that run natively on iOS, you know, because they are too risky. There is a very simple way to make both MacOS and iOS 100% safe. Just get rid of all third party apps. -
Advertisers flee to Android as majority of iOS users opt out of ad tracking
I love it. It's like a system-wide ad blocker implemented by Apple. I wonder if there will be any negative impacts for iOS users? It is really tempting to smash that NO button. The advertisers really have not done a good job of explaining why answering Yes is worthwhile to the end user which is the entire reason the button was put in to begin with: Advertisers are doing things which are not in the best interest of users.
Personally I kind of like ads. Remember those ones that surrounded the entire screen with bars showing synchronized animations that Apple did in the Mac vs PC days? They were wonderful. I miss seeing them but I run an ad blocker all the time. I have never even once been asked by a web site why I run an ad blocker. The just whine at me to turn it off. Here are the reasons why I run an ad blocker even though I like ads:
1. There is no who guarantees that ads are safe and don't contain malware.
2. Ads are the #1 vector for malware including ransomware due to unsafe javascript.
3. Ads use 99% of the bandwidth on most web sites. A kilobyte of useful text and tens of megabytes of crap.
4. There are no industry rules for what an ad can do on your computer and no one to enforce the rules if they did exist.
5. Ads not only track you but keep finding ways to extract value from you that have nothing to do with advertising. -

Epic versus Apple: What's at stake if Apple loses
Why is loss of revenue for Apple listed as a Con? Doesn't that mean increased revenue for app developers or savings for Apple customers? Couldn't that be seen as a Pro?
Unless you are an Apple employee or shareholder, you should want lower costs for developers. That just encourages more apps to be developed. That even helps Apple as their products become more desirable. As far as loss of revenues or profits for Apple, why does it even matter at this point? Apple uses a lot of its profits to buy back its own shares in order to keep the price per share rising and make their stock options more valuable. That sounds like a Con to me. Apple should be heavily investing in new products and technologies but instead continues to hoard cash and buy back shares. A little struggle for income would do the company (and it's customers and developers) some good. -
Apple's push for 3D will require voxel map of the world, claims VR evangelist
Google Earth VR is pretty addictive. It is so interesting to explore locations that have voxel maps. Google already has much of the planet scanned in 3D. The app give the viewer a sort of gods eye view of the planet as everything is shrunk down to look like a table top model (there is a realistic scale too which is also worth trying). This would be a great area for Apple to get into as they already have 3D scans of many cities. Currently they do not allow developers to use them in VR mode sadly but this seems to be a direction they are going in.
