I heard that Apple streamlined the process for iPhone owners who are already signed up on the Upgrade Program.
They were able to pre-authorize themselves for upgrading, and they probably were the first to complete their iPhone X pre-orders.  
That will be me next year.  :-)  Just like Jnoel.

Oddly, Safari on iMac got through a few minutes before the Apple Store app.  Roughly 12:10am PST.

I ended up getting a "reservation" instead of an actual pre-order.  (Signed up for the Update Program too.)
The full pre-order transaction didn't complete because Apple couldn't contact F-ING AT&T's servers.
As Jdgaz said, I'll be getting an email from Apple when they do get through.
I'll have 24 hours after the email is sent to complete the pre-order.
Hopefully my "spot in line" will be preserved.  I "reserved" my iPhone at about 12:10.

Better snap up Trader Joe's before Google does.
Should be way cheaper than LinkedIn.  Even with a 50% premium.

Will I need to take off my Ray-Bans when unlocking my iPhone?
Will it work in total darkness when I'm trying to use the iPhone's flashlight feature?
Will I need to look directly into the FaceTime camera when unlocking?

I'm hoping my 2017 iPhone will have these features:

1. More shatter-resistant screen (I cracked mine and had it replaced thru AppleCare+)
2. Stainless steel antenna band with Space Black diamond-like-carbon coating
3. Ceramic back for shatter resistance
4. Wireless charging

In other words, I'd like my next iPhone to be built like a larger version of my Apple Watch Series 2.
It already has tougher screen glass, a totally scratch-proof DLC coating, a ceramic back, and wireless charging.
