  • AppleCare One launches as a single plan to cover multiple Apple devices

FYI, here are the deductibles for theft or loss:

Apple Watch:$119 for theft or loss

iPhone: $149 for theft or loss

iPad: $129 for theft or loss

    https://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/fees-deductibles/

FWIW, many credit card companies will cover theft or loss with no deductible on iPhone if you pay your cell bill on their card. Not sure, but I think a cell enabled watch would similarly be covered. It is limited to like once every two years, but still...free is a good price. And they do seem to get good reviews from consumers - they actually do pay.

If this is a device you are eagerly looking forward, I am happy for you. Having more choices is always a good thing. I do want you to eventually have your wish come true.

I am disappointed that this is a priority for Apple seemingly to the exclusion of other projects. I can think of many other things I would prefer to see - things like an ATV with an OTA tuner (ATSC3?); a new Airport with an onboard Apple branded VPN; updated Beats Fit Pro (those wingtips actually work well). None of these things seems to be even remotely on the radar for Apple. Heck, even something as simple as a hardware cover on my iPhone camera lenses (a little slide device in the case) would be welcome. That the smart home stuff is all reliant on AI that doesn't seem to work is all the more disappointing. To me. YMMV.

    1) I think you are making a logical fallacy by assuming that this is a priority that causes other projects not to be worked on. Apple has 164k employees, according to Wikipedia. Sure, most probably aren't HW or SW engineers, but they surely have more than enough to have parallel projects in the works.

From my PoV, the fact that this HomeHub rumor keeps getting pushed back indicates that it's not that much of a priority for Apple. I can't imagine that the revenue and profits will be high unless they do something drastic. I say that because the current consumer-grade stuff isn't that expensive, and the commercial-grade stuff that requires someone with skills to install and configure properly, like Control4 or josh.ai.

I have been looking forward to Apple's HomeHub because I don't there's a great middle ground option at this point. This segment is still far too kludgy, IMO.

    2) As much I'd like to see a lot of those HW changes, especially Apple returning with great mesh routers, I don't think they have any of those sitting on the back burner waiting for engineers to be free.
Concur. You are likely right on all counts. Just because I don't see rumors doesn't mean there aren't actually other projects.

  • HomeKit may keep some Wemo devices alive after shutdown in 2026

This is a prime, specific example of why this smart home crap is crap. I’ve bought my last Belkin product.

I drank the kool-aid on this, and now really regret it. Fortunately, I didn't go all-in, so my damage is limited to one installed light switch in the wall that really was difficult to install. When it fails, I will replace it with a traditional electromechanical switch like was there for 70+ years without a hitch. The wall plugs will just go in the trash.

Funny, but Belkin says they will stop "supporting" the product. They keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means.

  • Apple has again Sherlocked developers with Clipboard History

Wonder how this behaves with Handoff? I don't keep sensitive passwords on my phone and thus sometimes use Handoff Copy from my Mac password manager to get a password over to the iPhone. Is Clipboard History going to hang on to these passwords until they are pushed out of the buffer? I would imagine there will be a keyboard shortcut to clear the buffer. Also, the option of turning this feature off might be nice.
At the risk of thread jack, there are a *lot* of UI and OS features i'd really like to turn off, perhaps selectively (AI I'm looking at you...) I find that I see these announcements for updates and upgrades, and think "oh, that's kinda cool" and then when I actually try it, it really isn't. I admit, maybe I'm not using my Apple devices like the machines the developers think. I just want simple, intuitive, and predictable. For example, this clipboard thingy has been 30 years in the making. When it arrives in September, my guess is I will look at it, and it won't be like what i've been using for...30 years. I'd like to turn it off. Will I be able to and just stick with the nice 3rd party one? YMMV.

And oh, I've never been able to actually use Spotlight. Yes, I guess I'm a dumbass, but it doesn't work for me and my needs at all. YMMV. Go to the finder, get a new window, do a search in a search bar. Found. Done. Bet that's been around for 30 years too.

How about a big button on the UI that erases all those search histories, clipboards, caches, cookies, hidden stuff. Put *that* in the UI, Apple.
