  • Apple again rumored to drop 3.5mm headphone jack from 'iPhone 7' for Lightning, Bluetooth

I think this interview with Gruber pretty much explains Apple's position. Schiller says it's all about pushing technology forward.
Around the 53:00 mark, Schiller explains thinness, 16gb storage, and single USB-c on the MacBook. I suspect these principles cross all products and why we may see the removal of the 3.5mm jack.

Sure, it's moving us more quickly into the wireless world. We need to start somewhere.
But I'm not sure I believe or agree with him with respect to thinness. It's here where I think they're making the wrong compromises.

  • Review: Apple Smart Battery Case for iPhone 6 & 6s

the "baffling" design decisions aren't baffling. you just didn't understand why they did them. Gruber does:

Gruber, Rene Ritchie and Jim Dalrymple get it. And since there are third-party options, which are even sold Apple stores, what's there to complain about. Buy something else if you don't like this option.
Not so sure about Ritchie and Dalrymple's views...those two are getting annoyingly fanboyish. At least Gruber dares to cross the line and admits it's a very 'un-Apple like design'.

However, writing a lengthy article to justify something so 'ungainly', is excuse-making at it's best. When has Apple neglected aesthetics and beauty in it's products? How many times have we heard Jobs or Cook gush over the 'gorgeous' design of an iPhone or MacBook.

I'm all for functionality and usability. Heck, I wish there was more of it from Apple. To start, give me an iPhone that isn't so slippery to the touch. But let's just stop with the bullsh*t and apologizing for clearly, a case that never should have been needed in the first place.

And it’s only getting criticism from the usual suspects who haunt the Internet with their constant negativity, which is a cancer-like sore that festers and destroys. Tim Cook should have ignored the question.

No worse than the usual suspects who blindly believe Apple is perfect and can do no wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, even the 'great and mighty' Ive.
Right because this was conceived and designed by one person and only exists because the 'great and mighty' Ive said make it so.
You don't think products leave Apple's internal design studio without Ive's approval?
Sure but I'll bet all my Apple stock this was one product the design team didn't really care about and focused little effort on. The focus is all on the design when the real question should be why the heck is Apple making a 1st party battery case in the first place?!?
Yes, why. Because the answer underscores a potentially bigger issue. The mere existence of a battery case is an omission for a need. So the question goes back to why is there a need in the first place.

And we come full circle to possibly, just possibly, that Apple may have erred or compromised focussing too much of form over function (thinness at the expense of battery life).

Look, I'm not privy to a lot of what goes on at Apple or what their priorities are when designing a product. I just think we should be open to the notion that everyone f*cks up including Jony Ive and Apple.

They do so much great design, we almost hold them to a higher standard. So when something like this comes out, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
