  • Developers Union urges Apple to allow free app trials, make it easier to earn a living

    ascii said:
Maybe the cut could be 30% initially (for example for the first 3 months) and then drop to something lower for the remainder of the life of the app.

It would help developers because they would have a bigger drip drip drip income from their back catalog, keeping them going. And might benefit customers too, because it would encourage developers to keep adding features to older apps rather than abandobing them, because they would have more to make from those older ones.
You mean like how subscriptions are already handled...?

This explains why all the sudden massive discounts of Mac Book Pro  models reported on AI these last few days I suspect.  Well, I only want a MBP for casual use so I grabbed a MBP with touch bar from Adorama thanks to the AI advertorial and have no regrets, heck of a saving.

Will Apple use the Radeon RX Vega M GH Graphics GPUs on the next generation MBPs I wonder?
It's been a long wait for many Mac Book Pro users to break the 16 GB memory barrier, and while I'm not the target audience, I expect a nice bump in sales when these are refreshed. Still, I have to wonder what additional niceties Apple will throw in.

I'm guessing it's still a bit early for cellular, albeit Intel must be looking at providing that as an integrated feature in the near future.
No bump in sales at all. The number of people who actually need that much RAM, especially on a laptop, is small indeed.
There will be a bump at refresh is all I that I meant; not that it will be attributable to increased memory. I agree with you that the 32 GB barrier is overblown.
Don't forget the inevitable complaints about the price of the future 32GB variant...and "what I really need is 64GB"...

  • Microsoft to reportedly target iPad with cheaper Surface tablets

A few things to keep in mind:

    1) The Surface line has been mostly targeted at the laptop user in recent years.  Very little is targeted at the tablet use cases.  The new Surface models to date have been traditional computers.  It is not clear at all that a market for Windows on a tablet, for pure tablet use cases, is of any potential size.

    2) Who has been purchasing Surface units?  Any stats?  Techie Windows fans (how many is that) + businesses mostly is what I suspect?  You rarely see/hear of them for tablet uses as used by consumers.  I don't know anyone that owns a Surface myself.

    3) Surface units sold are not as large as revenue would make one think.  Of the $1.3B in revenue MS reported for the holiday quarter, that is likely less than 1M units as the ASP is high with the Surface line.  IDC estimated that MS sold ~750K "detachables" in that timeframe.  Vs. 13.2M iPads.

In short, I don't think this will provide much competition to Apple.  Might affect a few % of sales, but that is about it.

What app caused an alarm to go off? Apple Watch built in heart monitor or something else? I did not know there was an alarm feature.
When a (quite) high heart rate is detected, but the wearer doesn't appear to be doing any vigorous exercise, the Apple Watch will raise an alarm.  It is a relatively new s/w feature implemented in a dot release of WatchOS 4.
