  • Editorial: Pro Display XDR and Apple's Grand Stand

I don't know that there was any need to reopen and reargue the whole Pro Stand issue, much less in 1,955 words. But this article is nonetheless completely on point: the stand is an elaborately engineered product, built in low volume for the professional market. (That Sony 4K rig shopping list provides a telling comparison.) Don't like it? Then don't buy it.

As usual with such things, the loudest voices of internet outrage are from people who aren't even remotely part of the target market.
Many of us USED TO BE part of the target market. We were used to considering ourselves part of that target market, and we were waiting for Apple to resume selling effective product to us. We don’t know why Apple have decided we don’t matter to them any more. All we know is that Apple have placed their ONLY heavy-duty machine WAY out of our price range.
Oh, cry me a river. We paid the equivalent of a Mac Pro plus Pro Display plus $1 K stand in 1984 for the original Mac plus and dot matrix printer ($3K). Tiny screen and two programs, MacWrite and MacPaint. And we barely cleared the credit line our incomes were so low.

    Best Investment Ever.

  • Apple delays 'The Banker' theatrical and streaming release on inaccuracy, sexual abuse cla...

So far, I've seen some seriously edgy and highly thoughtful videos coming out of Apple TV+. Far from the pablum some on this forum were predicting, this stuff is not pulling any punches. The adult fare is in fact adult fare.

It would be a shame if what looks to be yet another edgy and thoughtful offering gets permanently pulled due to some individual's failings. Hopefully, a way forward can be found to release this film I was personally looking forward to.

  • Russia to ban iPhones and all devices not pre-loaded with local apps

There is too much left to-be-determined in the legislation to really know if it could cause Apple to do anything special. If the state-mandated apps were not subject to Apple’s review/approval process, then that would be a deal-breaker, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
This explains it all a bit more clearly. BTW, for better or worse the Russian apps must be pre-installed, something that a few of the commenters  were not aware of:

    Thanks for the link!

Re: Apple vetting the software, from the article:

A mandate to add third-party applications to Apple’s ecosystem would be equivalent to jailbreaking [gaining unauthorized access to a device’s file system]. It would pose a security threat, and the company cannot tolerate that kind of risk,” This from a source within Apple.

Pretty clear Apple wouldn’t be allowed to block required apps.

Time for Apple to refuse to comply.

Edit: Short of an iPhone Police, how would this be enforced? Sure, some people will “trust” the Russian leadership to the hilt (look what’s happening in the good old USA!), but we’re talking about millions of iPhones that can be bought outside of Russia then brought in.

I suppose the government could walk around and ping passing phones, thus spotting those that don’t have their software. But that’s pretty conclusive proof of government-installed crap in itself.

Methinks Putin may have overplayed his Big Brother hand on this one....

  • Initial 'The Morning Show' reviews were 'attack on Apple,' executive producers say

My wife and I have just finished seeing all episodes of The Morning Show and For All Mankind. Two really good shows! Looking forward to more episodes and the other shows.

We also watched the Disney offering, The Mandalorian, and felt it was also worth watching. And while we'll probably stick with the channel for now, since that's literally the only new piece they're offering that's of interest to us, it feels expensive, so I don't know how long that will last.

  • Notes of interest from Apple's Q4 2019 earnings report and conference call

$64 B is an all time high for this quarter. It’s also right at the absolute high end of Apple’s guidance a quarter ago.

    Not dead yet....
