  • Tim Cook says Apple is 'investing aggressively' in the future of the Mac

Maybe I'm all alone on this - but I truly resent the soldered down DDRAM in the Macs that are on sale now.  The last Mac's I've bought are all 2012 versions, so I can bump the RAM to 16 Gig.  Do you know how well the i7 screams with 16 Gig vs 8 Gig?  Simply stated, upgrading the DDRAM module from a USED Mac Mini with an i7, throwing in a few SSD's and investing a few hundred dollars in hardware will give you a machine that simply blows away a comparable new Apple product.

Please Apple - don't force me to buy 4+ year old machines, with old graphics processors.  Let me buy a new Apple with what I can afford today; with the option to bump the DDRAM and even add a second hard drive (or SSD) later on when I have more money.  Otherwise, the Hackentosh is the only viable answer, because buying an overly expensive Mac with hamstrung hardware that has ZERO upgradeability after the sale, simply is not a viable option.

  • A very false narrative: Microsoft Surface vs Apple iPad, Mac

Microsoft's "success" with it's devices is easily monitored when I leave the Apple Store in the St. Louis Galleria mall location and walk down the corridor past the Microsoft store.  Day of the week or time of day doesn't matter, there is never more than one or two customers present to busy the store staff.  But it is always a contrast to the numbers of customers at the Apple Store.  Sad.

I live outside of Salt Lake City, and what I find truly pitiful, is despite MSFT's obvious attempts to copy Apple's Store, down to the layout, the furniture, and even the general color scheme - where Apple's store is clean, streamlined and easy to navigate; the MSFT store is cluttered, the aisles are full of cardboard displays selling crap, the shelves are packed in an unorganized manner, and the tables have cardboard placards with coupons filling every table.  The tables are piled with different brands of monitors, each running a different game or piece of software - with no indication as to what they are selling.  Instead of being streamlined and neat; it looks like someone is having a garage sale in the mall - it's worse than a Black Friday table in the middle of a store that is going out of business.  Who would want to dig through that cacophony of crap?  No thanks - I'll just order my software from Amazon.

    wow...great description...that narrows it down
Do you really need a description? One could hazard a guess, but then one would be called a "racist". Let's just say that the odds are that the perps were likely not White boys between the ages of 16-24 that just left choir practice.

  • How to make your Apple Watch battery last longer

Kudo's on the 2nd Gen Watch. I use every complication I can fit on the watch, I use it to work out (and let's face it .... I can stand to do this), I use my Apple Watch with everything listed above enabled, and still find myself using the timer function, the elliptical bike function, walking, maps and more - ... and generally when I got to bed - I'm still sitting with at least 70% charge remaining. . Maybe I got an exceptionally efficient watch, but I am impressed. I have not yet tried going 2 days, but there is every reason to believe I could.

  • Apple axes Wi-Fi router division, apparently signaling the end of AirPort

This utterly sucks, I have recently been through 5 different routers from other vendors , all of which were complete shit. Two weeks ago I gave the AirPort Extreme a go and all my wifi problems are now fixed.

You are absolutely correct.  I have owned NetGear, Linksys, ASUS, EarthLink - you name the brand, and I have owned it.  They all suffered from Router Rot, after about a year of service, they started dropping out.  They would need to be reset, first every few days, then every day, then every few hours.

A buddy talked me into trying the Apple Airport Extreme when it was time to upgrade to 802.11n; it was a rock.  Set it once, and never touched it again.  When I finally upgraded the network to the 802.11ac, the old router was the easiest thing to add on as an extender.  It asked "Add as an extended Router" and it was just that easy.  Solid performers!!  The 802.11n router is now 7 years old, and the 802.11ac is 2 years old - both are working perfectly.  They don't need to be reset, they "just work".
