  • All the new features in iOS 11.4: AirPlay 2, Messages in the Cloud, & much more

You have to read footnote 1 in https://support.apple.com/en-jo/ht207428 for confirmation that once Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages are now stored in general iCloud storage (which still counts towards your free 5GB or paid storage plan), rather than iCloud Backup storage.
Since most people have tons of text messages with photos and some videos, it looks like iMessages in the Cloud is Apple's way to get people to buy more storage since 5GB is nothing and people typically have the Messages setting to retain all messages.  I don't back up to the cloud since it is not a full backup in the cloud, but many people do and it maxes out their 5GB free storage and so iMessages won't work in the cloud since it uses the same space.  Apple should increase their free tier to 10GB and not force people to pay for storage to use features.
If you are out of space you may not be able to enable Messages in iCloud, but once enabled tour backups will shrink in size as Messages will no longer be included in backups, so it doesnt use any more space then before and if you have multiple devices, it could quite well use less space than before as you will only have one copy of attachments and conversations.

iCloud backup includes everything - what do you think is not included in an iCloud backup?

  • Ossic bails on $3.2 million Kickstarter and Indiegogo '3D headset' project [u]

Kickstarter is no different than eBay or sometimes Amazon Marketplace, etc - you need to be discerning and evaluate how realistic the product and pricing are before donating.

  • iPhone X was world's best-selling smartphone model in first quarter

Well, if Apple is the second largest smartphone handset manufacturer annually (far behind Samsung and very slightly ahead of Huawei), and only made one phone, it would have the top selling model. It doesn't have just one model but it does have very few. Both Samsung and Huawei have different strategies to Apple and have far more models.

Clearly they are unlikely to have a top seller (but it isn't impossible) with so many models available.

Huawei has far more marketshare than Apple in China but has no single model in the top 5 (or top 10 IIRC).

Apple has three current high end models for sale, how many high end models do Huawei and Samsung have?

The key is to realize the many economy model phones that other companies sell are not in Apple's market and aren't competition for iPhone, so they don't split the share that matters and at which Apple thoroughly dominates both in profits and market share.

  • Apple's services business continues monster growth, revenues up 31 percent in record-break...

Side Note: I wonder if the sales of iPads will surge if MS brought Visual Studio and SQL Server to iOS.

I don't see how anyone could use the iPad as a serious development environment. I develop with dual 31" monitors, and I'm sure most developers have at least dual monitors even if only 24".

  • Notes of interest from Apple's Q2 2018 conference call

Everyone seems to be leaving out the first part of the quote:
Since we split the line with the launch of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in 2014, this is the first cycle in which the top of the line iPhone model has also been the most popular.

They also seem to already be pulling in plenty of switchers to Mac:

We were happy to see double digit growth in our active installed base of Macs to a new all-time high, with almost 60% of March quarter purchases coming from customers who are new to Mac.

Somehiw I don't think they sold less than expected of the iPhone X:

We were surprised somewhat that through all of this period of time that the iPhone X winds up at the most selling, most popular for every week of the time since the launch.

I think Tim was saying Apple views the iPhone X as a SuperBowl winner but some "people" think it should have won the game by more points.
