  • iPhone 13 review roundup: Great cameras, incredible battery life

Off topic from this article, I know but man I wish I hadn't updated my XS to ios15.  What smoothness remained in this device is now gone.
You can try booking a Genius Bar appointment and demand that they restore the XS' performance or put 14 back on it.

  • Tim Cook talks the need for privacy and exciting AI, AR

I don't believe anything Apple tells about privacy until image scanning (CSAM) on the device is finally declared to be dead.
It has already been explained that you have to opt-in to iCloud Photos syncing to enable CSAM scans.

  • Viral AirTag discovery behind license plate likely staged

So what’s the angle here? Fifteen minutes of fame (remember Tawana Brawley) or the hope of getting money out of Apple?
It's not that hard to figure out. If you're on social media and produce "viral content" for living, it's about gaining enough followers or subscribers that you can do it for a living. Shenanigans with recent Apple products are par for the course.

  • Epic Games vs Apple -- The continuing App Store saga

Wait, does Epic make the same amount of money whether Fortnite players choose Apple's or Epic's payment processor?

Sony can take their cut, Microsoft can take their cut, but Apple and Google can't?

Epic's premeditated PR campaign to cast Apple as the bad guy by tapping into popular resentment of Apple's success is pure obfuscation. It's meant to hide that this was always about about a competing payment processor trying to use the courts to cleave its way into the App Store.

The App Store games have shifted to a "freemium" business model, in which the app is free, and revenue comes from in-game purchases. Apple's isn't allowing alternate payment processors because this loophole would result in Apple making no revenue from the app at all. I'm sure some of you would argue that an unsustainable business model is justified because Apple "is too rich and greedy."

  • Is it safe to leave your Mac plugged in and always on?

I can tell you experience that leaving a computer with a lithium ion battery chemistry at 100% charge state for several months is really bad for the battery's health. It resulted in the battery not holding a charge when I finally unplugged it (the voltage output was erratic). Even after trying to cycle the battery and recalibrate the laptop's battery firmware to match the new output curve, the battery's capacity was permanently cut by over 60%, far worse than if I had simply used the battery and cycled it all the time. I suspect the battery's voltage output would suddenly drop, causing the laptop to read it as a sudden change in capacity (from 55% to 10%), in some cases, suddenly shutting off the laptop.
