I did the same thing. For my needs (watching videos, reading magazines and newspapers, editing documents in Pages), it's just fine. It's a big upgrade from the iPad Air (the original version) that it replaced.

Has it been mentioned if this $5 covers a family? So far Music and News+ both provide a subscription to the whole family (Music if you pay the extra $5). If this $5 covers the four of us, I'll probably give it a shot. If not, I'll let me son pay for his own access

I so miss Littlesnapper. It had a great toolset, wonderful (non-destructive) markup options, and a built-in library. One of my favorite features was that a screen capture was automatically copied to the clipboard, which made it super easy to grab a screenshot that I could email to my team. It still (somewhat) works under Mojave, but has had quirks under the past few versions of MacOS and I don't expect it'll run much longer. Ember was an okay replacement upgrade, but both have since been discontinued.

I wish there was a good alternative...

You may have success with this. Then again, you may not. I created a VM last year in an attempt to keep using Final Cut Express, and it would not run. There were some graphics references that wouldn't run under virtualization, probably due to Parallels' video driver and/or the lack of direct access to the display.

I was hoping to do this for Aperture, but I suspect it will have the same issue. I should give it a shot before I upgrade... It's the one thing I'm still holding out on.

I will bundle if I can get ad-free Hulu, which I already pay for. Ads piss me off.
