  • iMac, iPad Pro, and AirTag -- Everything announced at Apple's "Spring Loaded" event

    The iPad Pro is becoming an ever more ridiculous product, especially the higher-end models.  They’ve got literally exactly the same processor as a desktop iMac and MacBook Pro, but still only have the highly locked-down iPad OS, where you can only run apps that are sanctioned and approved by Apple.  Considering its supposed power and capability, this is a total cop-out.

    Sure macOS on the 11” model wouldn’t be ideal (though they have shipped an 11” product with it previously), but the 12.9” model is just begging for macOS.  They could offer it tomorrow if they wanted to.  If you could dual-boot between macOS and iPad OS it would make these devices so much more compelling, and they’d finally maybe deserve their Apple-appointed Pro status.

    They’ve also stubbornly resisted multiple user accounts on iPad OS if I’m not mistaken (admittedly I didn’t watch the event) for years now.  Why can’t a Pro device support multiple user accounts?  That’s such a simple and basic feature.  But no, they want rich people to have to buy one for each family member lest you expose your emails and messaging to everybody!

    On the upside, I’m glad Air Tags are finally coming.  Not sure how useful they’ll be against theft considering a thief could simply take the battery out and/or discard the device if and when they find it, but in the case of misplaced items it could help.

    Funnily (or not so depending on your perspective) Apple applies some level of filtering on what they’re willing to engrave on the products you buy.  They block certain so-called profanities like the F and S words.  This further demonstrates how Apple has become a bland nanny corporation.

  • Compared: 24-inch M1 iMac vs 21.5-inch and 27-inch Intel iMac

    I still can't get over the white bezels.  All Apple laptops and iMacs have had black bezels for a while... for good reason.

    But I'm not nor will I ever be in the market for an iMac.  It's a budget computer (relatively) so you have to accept a cheap-looking design to complement its budget specs.  I like that they went with colours though.  Taking the PSU out is a good idea as well.  Who cares about a small brick for a desktop computer?

  • Tim Cook 'probably' leaving Apple in next ten years

    Can it be 10 weeks?  I’ll even settle for 10 months!

  • Apple considering ruggedized Apple Watch for release as soon as 2021

    “Apple” and “rugged” strike me as two words that are mutually exclusive/incompatible.

    Sure, they may want to make a watch that looks rugged (and even that I doubt) to chase the rugged wearables market, but I don’t believe it’s in their DNA (to paraphrase Apple’s own terrible and cliched metaphor) to make products that are genuinely tough and long-lasting.

  • Apple asks court to toss Epic Games lawsuit in Australia

    @crowley is right.

    For the others who replied above: so long as Apple and Epic do business in Australia--which they do--they are bound by the relevant local trade and other laws that apply here.  If Epic wishes to argue for a breach of those laws that affects their business in Australia they have every right to have their case heard.

    If Apple feels aggrieved or that Epic has broken their contract in the US, that's not very relevant here; if at all.  They should file a claim against Epic in the US where the agreement was made.  It's a completely separate issue.  To suggest otherwise is to argue that individual countries/markets have no sovereignty over their local laws, which is plainly false.
