How, then, is this a story? If they were able to get information from your device by BYPASSING your settings, then that to me would be a serious issue.

Why "exception of Canada and NZ"? They are willing and active participants in this and have been for a long time. Just cause they don't currently have conservative government doesn't mean that was always the case or will always be the case.
