The Dutch “discovered” New Zealand and named it Nova Zeelandia after the Dutch province of Zeeland (Sealand in English).
British explorer James Cook subsequently anglicised the name to New Zealand.
The Polynesian name is Aotearoa (land of the long white cloud).
