Microsoft launches finished Visual Studio for Mac with support for all Apple platforms
sixcolors said:mytdave said:Yawn. Let me know when they come out with Mac (and other platforms) versions of Project and Visio. Does anyone actually use VS for any serious development? I know we sure don't, but then again we develop primarily in Linux.
This isn't unique within Microsoft - Outlook on iOS is also a warmed over 3rd party purchase , that is a completely different codebase to other Microsoft products with the same name. People think they want it by virtue of brand/name association from their windows desktop experience.

Motorola Solutions to equip Victoria Police with 10K iPhones, iPads in A$50M deal
plovell said:tundraboy said:I suppose Motorola Solutions has no corporate connection to Motorola, the android phone maker.
It's therefore easier for the police to use iOS, as they can just take an evaluated configuration and adjust it to their requirements, rather than start from scratch & need to accept a lot of additional risk themselves .
Northern Territory, Queensland and New Zealand police are using this or a similar systems on iOS. It will be interesting to see if Motorola take this globally, or it stays just as an Australian - NZ market solution for them -
Apple asked to pay hundreds of millions in back taxes in Australia in wide-reaching probe
lkrupp said:Okay, so we have the Australian government lawsuit over the ‘Error 53’ issue, the big Australian banks wanting to force Apple to let them use TouchID for their own purposes, and now an Australian tax avoidance lawsuit coming if Apple doesn’t comply. Sounds like coordinated attacks to me. I wonder what’s behind all of this.
Under Australian tax law, you need to comply with the intent , not just the letter of the tax code, and the tax office can effectively retrospectively change the law.
Essentially, the ATO is taking the position that transfer pricing between subsidiaries , is used to reduce tax, and shift taxable income to low tax jurisdictions . They are hitting up lots of companies , of which Apple is one - including g Australian companies that do the same thing.
The ACCC position is very clear , and the consumer protection law in Australia is pretty strong . All the good stuff Apple does doesn't count as credit for the handful of things they do that are wrong or illegal -
Apple snubs Nokia's Withings on new HomeKit accessories webpage
So 2 part problem;
- Patents : Apple has already paid Nokia under FRAND terms for most/all of the tech involved. What Nokia is doing is "patent re-engineering" to try and extract additional revenue from the market, by tweaking existing patents, getting the new ones re-issued, and then claiming non-FRAND licensing terms for essentially the same thing but under a new patent. That will get dealt with in a court, but it's dodgy AF.
- Withings may be withdrawing from HomeKit - they have basically stated they are setting up their own cross platform rival system - it would not make sense for Apple to push / promote an orphaned Withings product -
Apple says 'many' exploits revealed in CIA leak already patched in latest iOS version
fashiony19 said:Yeah at this point, I don't believe Apple at all that they patched these exploits. Open source your code or I'm calling BS. Today's leaks prove only one thing, that no electronic device in major use today is safe from hacking/snooping.
That covers almost all of the anti-exploitation measures in the platform - there is some stuff like the Secure Enclave , Lightning connector, and TouchID that are only black box tested as they are proprietary.
Could Apple do more ? Yep. But they are really one of the better vendors in terms of , at least where it is measurable, actually apparently doing what they say they do.
