  • Apple faces iCloud lawsuit after after judge reverses victory

I don’t fully understand how Apple is requiring Apple users to use its iCloud backup. There are other options such as Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive.

Well, none of those do a full backup of the phone.  Those are just ways to sync files from your phone to other devices.

But there ARE other ways to backup your phone other than paying for iCloud.  I use iTunes on Windows for free.  (Which has since been replaced, but iTunes still works and is being maintained.)  It's not as automatic or convenient, but it's locally-stored and free.  I believe there are other tools that can also do it, but they're also not free, and I've never messed with them.

  • Apple & Google profit as Chinese VPNs collect your private data

Kind of a weird way to phrase that - lots of Apps have ties to China, with varying clarity.  Is that something anyone is expecting Apple or Google to screen for?  How even would they?  They're mostly screening the app itself, and that's mostly automated. They're not doing thorough background checks on developers.

  • U.S. lawmakers & WhatsApp side with Apple against UK demand for iCloud encryption backdoor...

"Once a backdoor exists, it becomes a notable weak point that would invariably be targeted by malicious actors."

Case in point... China likely had access to US wiretapping backdoors for over a year before it was detected, and penetration was so deep, that nearly a year after it was discovered, they were still believed to have some remaining footholds.

    Next step: Skeuomorphism!

I had the same thought.  I was waiting for someone to describe it as "lickable".  lol

  • Intel app compatibility on Mac is holding you back and will never get better

I, and perhaps quite a few others, are in an even worse predicament: we rely on x86 apps that were never even ported to macOS!  In my case, for the last 15 years, I've had to run Intuit TurboTax for Business in a Windows 10 VM on my x86 MacBook Pro.  Intuit - a pretty large software house - has never seen the need, despite user pleading, to publish a Mac version.  But besides shaming them in forums like this, not much I can do.  Anyway, it ran just fine in a Parallels VM over the years, so I resigned myself to keeping an x86 Mac around just for that - and for building x86 Linux installers (again in a VM) of a commercial app I support.  But that Mac is getting a little long in the tooth.  I had hoped that Parallels would provide a Rosetta-like solution so I could run x86 VMs on an Mx Mac at some point.  And, to their credit, they recently came out with such a thing - but very crude and very slow.  Not really useable really, from what I hear.

I wish Apple provided a performant x86 interpreter a la Rosetta to the VM makers, so those of us who need to use or build x86 apps can do so on current Macs.

Yeah, Quicken was a huge sore point for me in the PPC-to-Intel transition.  I was a Mac die-hard for decades, and even more so after the switch to Intel.  Between Boot Camp and Parallels and Linux, I could run *anything* on my Intel Macs.  But I don't even own a Mac now.  It doesn't matter how fast they are if the software doesn't run on them.

Don't get me wrong, Apple Silicon Macs are a *fantastic* hardware platform, with an amazing OS on top, and if the software you need runs on them, they cannot be beat.  But ultimately, the software comes first.
