Plex may take on Roku, Amazon, Apple & others with ad-supported movies & third-party subsc...
allmypeople said:I have been considering Plex. Any other impressions? I spent hours with Apple tech trying to solve why my ATV wouldn't wake up my computer to play files. Never fixed that.
I love the ATV but iTunes does absolutely nothing to improve my ability to organize media. The program (and dev team, i guess) seem OBSESSED with wanting to make it "pretty" rather than functional. Can you access your media on Plex when you're outside the home or do you have to download the content off your network ?Yes, you can access Plex outside your home network. I've used it many, many times while away on vacation, or to download something from my Plex server for a flight back home.I've been a Plex user for years and years (back when it was horrible to set up). It's not perfect, but it's the best thing I've found for managing my content. I'm not a fan of the changes they made to the iOS app (many more clicks to get to the content you want), but I've learned to adapt to it. 90% of my Plex viewing is on my Apple TV, which has a straight-forward interface. If they ever change that to mimic the iOS version then I'll be looking for a change as well, likely moving towards Infuse paired with the Plex server. -

Right now you buy a Blu-ray and many come with a Digital Copy for iTunes, which you redeem and the HD version is unlocked. However, upgrading these to 4K versions would mean you could go out and buy a $10 (CAN) copy of Deadpool, get the BD, and the 4K version from the iTunes store, and it'd be way cheaper than buying the 4K disc, or the 4K iTunes copy. I can't see the studios going along with that (though I really hope they do, as I have TON of Digital Copies unlocked in iTunes).
@gordlacey, I've found a lot of times in CA, when getting the Blu + digital movies on black friday / boxing week is often much cheaper than just getting the digital only from iTunes. Strange but true. I think the upgrade will all depend on when the film studios do the conversion - I would hazard they will prioritize their most popular films first, so it could be just a case of playing the waiting game. I doubt many will be ready day one, other than current block buster films.
