iPhone 5 'by far the most popular iPhone,' Apple says
Though executives with Apple said they are pleased by sales of the legacy iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, they also noted that the iPhone 5 remains "by far the most popular iPhone" they sell.
The comments come as Apple has seen its gross margins slide, leading to speculation that previous-generation iPhone models are growing in popularity.
Data released this week found that the iPhone 5 accounts for just over half of all iPhone sales, while the iPhone 4S is responsible for 30 percent of smartphones Apple sells. The share of the iPhone 5 peaked after its launch last October, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, when the latest-generation model accounted for 68 percent of all iPhones sold.
In the just-concluded June quarter, iPhone sales in Japan were particularly strong ? up 66 percent year over year. The iPhone is the top selling smartphone in Japan, according to the latest data from IDC, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer noted.
Also singled out as having strong sales were the U.S., U.K., Brazil, Russia, India, and Thailand, representing both developed and emerging markets. Apple was either the No. 1 or No. 2 smartphone manufacturer in North America, Western Europe, Russia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Total iPhone shipments were up 20 percent year over year to 31.2 million units. That represented a new record for the June quarter.

Oh they will and you can bet that some Samsung executives are scared to death of when they will. They would have to retreat to the sub $400 to avoid competition from Apple and there they will get squeezed by the Chinese.
Makes perfect sense, the 4 was probably the first iPhone I considered buying (or any smartphone for that matter).
And, the 5 is the first smartphone I would say met the bar for being user friendly, fast enough + enough RAM.
Plus, they finally gave into what people wanted (larger screens). Of course, I dunno if they "gave in" or it was always semi-planned

Since Apple bills the 4 inch display as "just right" and suggests that wider displays are "oversize, awkward, and hard to use" (http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/), it's hard to imagine any further screen enlargement being "semi-planned." So if those rumors of a larger iPhone have any substance, we should expect to see some creative marketing in the near future.

That's easy.
"Introducing the iPhone 7. The first iPhone designed for two hands!"
Just kidding. I think larger screens are why they introduced the Back swipe gesture.
Not to mention that one of Apple's early video ads for the iPad mini commented on how easy it was to use with ONE hand. If the 7.9" mini can be used with one hand, then anything its size or smaller can be used that way, too.
"by far the most popular iPhone"- what does that actually mean?
The best selling iPhone ever? The one that most iPhone5 owners like?
"Also singled out as having strong sales were the U.S., U.K., Brazil, Russia, India, and Thailand"- An even stranger statement. In two of those countries, namely Russia and India, Windows Phone is outselling the iPhone, which means that Apple must be in third or forth place. source http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/27/where-in-the-world-are-windows-phones-outselling-iphones/?_r=0

Good point. There is also another blow around the corner: there is an army of 3GS users that served for the longest time and is bound to be upgraded because of iOS7. Remember they were still sold less than a year ago. Apple will really have busy fall...

For most of the iPhone's history, 3.5" was considered the "sweet spot". They didn't have any problems telling people that 4" was "just right" so I doubt convincing people that 4.8" is "perfect" would be an onerous task.
Perhaps a "radical" redesign of the phone could allow them to put a bigger screen in without increasing the footprint. Afterall, do the mic and home button really need so much space?

Of course not.

Except no one can say that. What we can say is October is one year from the last iPhone.
