Chevron to support Apple Pay at the pump in early 2015 [u]

Chevron will expand Apple Pay support from inside its convenience stores to the pump, allowing drivers to refill and pay with their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Apple is working directly with Chevron, the gas company revealed through its official Twitter account Monday afternoon, to bring Apple Pay support. The company hopes to have its systems in place for Apple Pay to be used at the pump by early 2015.

Chevron has been an early adopter of Apple Pay, and supported the tap-to-pay service at its stores and Texaco Extra Mile locations when it debuted in October. However, until now, Chevron customers have only been able to pay when they enter the convenience store, as support for Apples NFC payment service is not yet available at gas pumps.

Chevron is currently the only gas and oil company listed among the official Apple Pay partners.

The announcement from Chevron comes on the heels of a report that said Apple is currently in talks with United Kingdom banks, looking to launch Apple Pay in the country in early 2015. With pay at the pump support and international expansion in the works, the start of 2015 could see major advances for the Apple Pay service.

In addition, while Apple Pay is currently limited to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, support will also be integrated in the upcoming Apple Watch, set to debut in early 2015. With the Apple Watch, owners of older iPhones, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5, will be able to gain Apple Pay support when paired with legacy devices.

Update: Chevron clarified via Twitter that it plans to integrate Apple Pay at the pump, but has no specific timeline on the rollout. In a separate tweet, the company noted a continued effort to roll out the service for in-store sales by year's end.

And it would be great if the lowered loss from fraud would trickle back to Chevron to offer lower than card-swipe costs for fuel, but we all know that won't happen.

Chevron has long extended benefits to same-sex couples unlike ExxonMobil who denied such until 2013.

Get Shell and Unocal76 on board, and I'll be in gas-fillup heaven!

I hope the savings in fraud-prevention trickles down to lower prices at the pump.  A lot of crooks go straight to filling up their cars the moment they get a stolen credit card on hand.

What does that have to do with supporting NFC at the pump?

Is there something special merchants need to do to support ?Pay? Otherwise isn't this just adding NFC to their pumps? Unless Chevron has its own loyalty card and that's what it's working with Apple to get added to ?Pay?

    Probably a borderline-homophobic joke.

I don't think so. I think [@]zroger73[/@] is merely pointing out that Chevron is more progressive company, which appears to extend to both civil rights and technology adoption.

    Bingo.

Even though Mobil had Speedpass almost 18 years ago. They mailed you an RFID keytag which was linked to a credit or debit card of your choice. Very convenient and cutting-edge technology at the time. The downside was security - if someone stole your Speedpass they could get free gasoline and other merchandise.

I don't think ones political ideology has anything to do with the technology they support. Rush Limbaugh is as conservative as you can get yet he's one of the biggest Apple fanboys out there. Target is a big supporter of gay rights yet none of their stores support NFC, in fact I think they're one of the MCX partners.

Sure, but if one can the ability to be future-forward along multiple avenues of thoughts then can you see how some would be more inclined to support them than if they were myopic to the point of being archaic in some of their decisions?

I usually refuel at Shell out of habit, but it is just as convenient for me to refuel at ExxonMobil or Chevron. Here, there is little difference from station to station unless you buy lower-tier gasoline at the likes of Walmart, which I avoid. Apple Pay at Chevron probably means I'll start refueling there if for nothing more than the "cool" factor.

That warning dates back to the late-1980s when the power output of cell phones was measured in watts instead of milliwatts and had retractable antennae. :)

I know, but it doesn't help explaining that to the attendants here in NJ who will refuse to start pumping until you hang up. (Yes, I know it's my fault for living in Jersey to begin with)
