Is there going to be a new Power Mac CPU in January?
I am looking at replacing my G3 that I have had for over five years. I am wondering if in January, a new Power Mac CPU will be coming out. I was just looking at the imac G5s and was leery about the all in one. I also understand the monitor isn't all that great. Give me some input please.

Personally I don't think it would hurt to buy a rev B. I have a rev B 970fx 2.0 g5. I love it. I had a single 733 g4 before this. I did however upgrade the graphics card to the 9800xt. I would advise you to at least get a 9600xt.
I don't know how you're still using a g3. But if you can hold out to June... do it... if not, you're not going to lose a whole lot by not waiting and getting what's available now.
It's a very good computer for home use. I do not see the difference with my office dual G5 2,0 ghz in term of performance for my daily use.
My machine works fine , but now the software is beginning to
outpace my poor old Beige tower's 300Mhz CPU and without AGP it's days are numbered as a hand me down to my kids next spring.
Even though the current single processor models are leaps and bounds
faster than what I have, I try to keep in mind that this machine cost me nearly $3000 and replacing it deserves careful consideration.

The 1,8 ghz G5 is much more performant than the G3 300. You will be impressed by the increase of performance between those two models.
The beige G3 is a 66 mhz mobo against dual channel DDR 400
The bus is 66 mhz against 600 mhz
The PCI bus for the video card is 16 times slower than the AGP 8 X bus
The SATA drive is 150 mB/Sec compared to 33 MB/sec
There is no USB, no firewire ports in the beige.
Ethernet is limited to 10 Mbits/sec, the Imac 100.
The beige is a G3 without altivec, the G5 is an VMX 64 bit chip.
I can think of a single application who will not be way faster on an imac G5.

At least I installed a USB card, Radeon 7000 card, Pioneer DVR106 Burner, a 120 MB Hitachi/IBM HD running 10.2.8 and it still works!
I've looked at the current lineup across the board and what I've seen
and READ has convinced me to wait till spring.
....and my tax return <">
The only major improvement I see for the iMac in the reasonable future is an option to upgrade the graphics card, but I doubt if I would notice the difference with the apps I have.
Since I had the 23" display I did consider a PM, but the reality is that I am tired of a ton of boxes around the house. The iMac more than addresses my needs and is a real joy.
While there will always be something better down the road the hardware available today is pretty impressive.

it doesnt really matter what it cost you. thats just the nature of technology. you pay lots of money or things, and then they become outdated. get what you can afford and dont worry about that hunk of plastic you're working on right now.
But old geezers like me can still dream about cool toys.
My " old hunk of plastic " will hold me till I see a Quadra.
Or I could be really practical and spend $55,000
on a MATCHING two seat sports car! <">

The display sucks. Look at it compared to the Apple Pro LCDs! It looks gross.
Or any other pro LCD display for that matter.

BUY THE CAR!! BUY THE CAR!!!
I autocross w/a guy who drive one of those. SHWEEEET!
until recently light web browsing. For some reason internet explorer
will freeze it up when the window opens up & netscape is not reading the
pages correctly.
Ten Years! The ROI beats any pc out there. It's been upgraded to 250 mhz,
128 megs of ram & a 4gig hardrive. My Apple lazer printer still works fine too.
Any heavy duty stuff that I do is on my mac at work. I am saving up to
upgrade my home system (hopefully by Feb/March.) Specs:
Dual 2.5ghz G5 w/2gig ram
30 inch apple monitor
canon I990 photo printer
Epson Perfection 4870 Photo Scanner
Adobe Design Pack
Digital Camera (7-8 megapixel. Not sure which one though)
Altec Lansing FX6021 - 2.1 Speakers
And maybe the 60gig photo iPod. Hopefully I can get my accountant
to write it off as a business expense if I use it as an external backup as well.
It's about 10 grand for all of this. I'm hoping that there will be new
dual-core dual-processor mac released in January.
A G5 Quadra powered, all aluminum, Shelby authenticated

If I merry off the kids before they go to college
Give the wife a one way ticket somewhere.......
Sell the house and build a really nice broadband equipped
garage to live in,
I might actually be able to pull it off
before I'm ready for that eternal dirt nap. <">

The 10 acres, the house, the wife and the kids are why I'm still running my G3!
