  • Apple not a monopoly but must allow alternate payment methods for apps, judge rules

Apple should not appeal this ruling. Apple can just charge more to developers that chose to use external payment systems. And if developers don't like the price, they can go elsewhere. Time will tell.

  • UK may block Nvidia ARM acquisition due to national security concerns

My gut feeling tells me that there will be BIG problems if Nvidia is allowed to buy ARM.

In any case I believe that Apple is only using the Instruction Set Architecture from ARM and not the the silicon design.  Although they could use the ARM silicon if their own silicon designs were not way more advanced than ARM.

In fact the original design for Apple's chip by PA-Semi were called PWRficient and were designed to use the PowerPC Instruction Set from IBM but Apple switched to the ARM instruction set after the purchase.  See presentation below...

Here is another article on Apple's license.

  • Apple debuts colorful 24-inch iMac with M1, upgraded camera and audio

I think the new iMacs are awesome!
16 GB of RAM and 2 TB of SSD is excellent for most folks.
I will wait for a 30 inch iMac with 32 GB of RAM and the 2TB SSD.  (need to run VMs)

I am curious to see how the iMac is connected to the stand.  It appears that there are 2 magnetic pins that go from the stand into the 24" iMac.
The iMac motherboard is amazingly small and yet has empty space for more surface mounted electronic devices.

  • Nvidia buying ARM for record-breaking $40 billion

Unless Nvidia and Qualcomm can produce enough chips using the ARM micro architecture and instruction set architecture ( ISA ) to out gun Intel and AMD for desktops, laptops and servers, this will be a big mistake and SoftBank knows it.  All the big dogs like Apple, have their own micro architecture designs and only license the ISA from ARM.

Today, Apple has the best and most advanced custom designs by far...

The Apple CPUs are likely based on the PWRficient POWER PC design from P.A. Semi which Apple acquired in 2008.  The micro architecture design was by Daniel W. Dobberpulh of DEC Alpha and StrongARM fame.   PA Semi initially licensed the POWER PC ISA from IBM but switched to the ARM ISA after Apple bought them.  That design was further enhanced with Apple's purchase of Intrinsity in 2010.

    From Wikipedia
“Intrinsity’s main selling point was its Fast14 technology, a set of design tools implemented in custom EDAsoftware, for using dynamic logic and novel signal encodings to permit greater processor speeds in a given process than naive static design can offer.”

Here is a PA Semi presentation on the PWRficient processor.

  • Apple not interested in takeover of Arm Holdings, report claims [u]

Purchasing all or part of ARM Holdings will save Apple some instruction set licensing fees in the long term.
