I can turn off 3G, but that leaves Edge running.

I can go into Airplane mode, then turn wifi back on, but then my phone is off.

2 gripes I have about my iPhone are:

    1) Lack of certainty that I'm not actually using wireless (so that I can better control it), and

    2) Lack of 'one-click' tools to turn specific features on or off. I shouldn't have to drill down to do simple things like turn bluetooth or wireless on/off.

    1) Jailbreak

    2) Install SBSettings.

You can swipe the top status bar from the home screen or in app and turn all of the radios on or off with a tap. It does everything you want (for free) and is one of the few remaining reasons I keep my phone jailbroken.

I guess the answer to your question would be another question...

Why should those of us who use little bandwidth subsidize your job for you?

You're the one making money from those 4 hours... its called cost of doing business.

    You pay for it.

This new pricing is great. Should save me $15/month.

I can't imagine using more than 2GB/month on mobile devices, unless someone is addicted to youtube or streaming porn.

You can say you will pay 17% less for the new 2GB plan than with the $30/month Unlimited plan, which I am sure most people will fall under.

Have you checked your AT&T usage for the last 6 months? Mine are all under 2GB now that I'm not tethering.

I was generalizing. But the plans clearly do not give you a $$ break proportional to your use.

Nevertheless, I've re-checked my usage and will indeed benefit under the new structure. I thought I used much more... guess I've cut down lately.

    Thanks for the 4G info.

I agree. The complainers here must use a hell of lot of network data. You think that they might hang around the pool hall and surf and email all day?

Jeez, I use my iPhone for email and the web alot and don't consume 200MB a month!

Maybe the clowns should carry out their threats and just switch.

I hated AT&T before..... now I hate them even more. I was planning on getting one of the higher end iPads with 3G .... but now..... If I even bother with it I'll only get the wifi model and use it at home. This is going to totally open up the market for Andriod and other competition to clobber AT&T's crappy ass packages.

AT&T also just made Steve Jobs look like a total lying asshole.... whether he wants to admit it or not. What in the hell were they thinking. I'm also going to start paying my AT&T bill with my AMEX card since I know they have to pay a higher percentage on each transaction.

AT&T needs to go the way of the doo doo. I got rid of my land line and refuse to use DSL because they suck there too..... iPhone is my only weakness.....

The tethering charge is complete bullshit! They're trying to make up for their way overpriced 3G internet connection for portables.... oh.... won't be buying one of those either Apple.

Wake the hell up Apple.... open the iPad and iPhone up for more competition.... this relationship with this wrinkled old whore called AT&T is NOT MAKING US HAPPY!

    It's PISSING US OFF!

I wonder how this will be applied to people with family plans?

    I use about 5-600 MB/month.

My wife uses about 100 MB/month.

Will we be able to drop our combined $60/month for data down to $25?

If so, then that's a great deal.

Otherwise, will we be able to choose different plans? $15/mo for her, $25 for me?

If not, then I end up less than thrilled. $30/mo for 2 200MB plans doesn't meet our needs, and 2 $25 plans for 4G/month leaves us paying almost as much as now for reduced caps and I may as well keep the 'unlimited'.

I don't think that can be stated without going user-by-user or by using an equation (which I'm too lazy to do right now). Even you said that you "will indeed benefit under the new structure."

I checked my usage for the last several months, which I don't think included any of my "illegal" tethering and I found an anomaly which I can't explain and which will costly should it occurs again.
    Month. . Usage

    NOV-09 . 719 MB

    DEC-09 . 401 MB

    JAN-09 . 1.6 GB

    FEB-09 . 6.1 GB

    MAR-09 . 284 MB

    APR-09 . 288 MB

    MAY-09 . 232 MB
With this new plan, February would have cost me $25 up to 2GB, plus $10 per 1GB x5, for a total of $75 or $45 more than I currently pay for Unlimited data. Furthermore, it will take 9 months to make up that difference to equal my current plan.

I certainly prefer the peace of mind of Unlimited data, but I also can't worked up over a company charging what they feel is right when I have other options available to me.

No kidding. I seriously doubt AT&T will miss them.

Somehow I doubt they would use as much data if they had to pay buy the gallon.

As opposed to them saying, "keep your current plan and pay twice as much to use only 20% of what you actually need."

Just got some info from @ATTAlexM

He said if we want to add tethering to our grandfather data plan, we need to upgrade to data pro.

Looks Like AT&T is pushing iPhone users to jailbreak their phones.

you can find it on my twitter page @djjesc

Sad day for peoeple looking to tether.

Wow, please at least know what you are taling about before you speak. Show me where anyone is asking you or anyone else to pay for tethering? Didn't think you could. I commented basically saying just because you do not need tethering doesn't mean someone else doesn't. Also the consensus is that I should not have to pay twice for something. Once I pay for my data it is mine and I should be free to use my 2GB how ever I see fit. I shouldn't have to pay AT$T to use it with my laptop, iPad etc.... what do they care, if I go over I pay more. So please unstick your head from your A$$ and atleast put it into the sand, do us all a favor.

It isn't unnecessary. AT&T knows exactly what they are doing. You can repeat their rationale for it however many times you want but that doesn't change the point that what is being offered is more expensive per unit and also is now the only feature of the iPhone that is not available in an unlimited fashion.

You can buy unlimited voice, you can buy unlimited texting. You cannot buy unlimited data. That right there ought to raise an eyebrow. Unlimited texting and voice could theoretically overwhelm the network and limited frequency allocations as well. However as always has been the case, the march of technology makes much more possible with the same amount.

They chose those data points for a reason and the costs will show up in the bills of those under them soon enough.

I think AT&T crunched the numbers and found that x% use just over 2GB while hardly any use more than 3GB. So while many will fall into the 2GB for $25/month more will fall into the >2GB plans charging and extra $10 or $5 more, resulting in more profit than before.

I think you are 100% right.

It does not make sense.....and it doesn't make sense in wireless networking either. I do not want to pay for anyone else's service.

Actually those utilities that have massive need are often subsidized by those who use less based off the fact they still get benefit from the infrastructure when economies of scale are factored in. Does the large farm that grows your food pay what you pay for water? No they actually pay much less even though they use much more. The benefit is considered given to you when you buy cheaper food.

If they simply implemented a rate per 1/2 gig, that would be totally fair.

    That's not what they're doing.

Exactly. Many on here see the point and I'm sure as time marches on, even more will.

What a bunch of whiners. You guys should go out ad get a job, then you'll be too busy to use any gigs. Plus you'll be making money and you can quit buying the cheap beer and give the street beggar a 5-er. You gotta pay to play - no free lunch.
