It depends on what percentage of the overall computer sales from the manufacturers that are sold on Amazom, Amazon sells.
First, Amazon doesn't sell all of the 45% of the industry sales that are left after Dell and Hp are subtracted, though Hp has a few models there. It's likely that they only sell a few manufacturers' products. Fully 27% of all computers sold in the US are from "other" manufacturers most of which Amazon doesn't sell. The ones they do, sell only in very small numbers.
Amazon may very likely appeal to a different audience from the average buying public.
That skews the results.
Amazon does sell a LOT of HP models though, and HP has triple Apple's US marketshare.
I guess Amazon's audience could be defined as more tech-savvy than your average Joe (which would be a compliment to Apple since they do better there), but other than that, I can't see any major differences from 'Amazonians' and the GP(general public).
I think I have the TRUE explanation for why this is happening though- HP has a much more 'splintered' line-up than Apple, i.e. sells significantly more models. So no one of their models really gets a chance to sell as many as, say, a mid-level 2.0GHz MacBook.
Still, regardless of these bogus stats, the majority of users are not going to rush out and buy Vista. Most folks regard computers as an appliance just like a Microwave,TV,etc... The enthusiasts will go out and buy Vista but they are a small fraction of the userbase and they are not enough to payoff 5 years of development costs.
Most folks are already having a hard time keeping XP running smoothly that they fear something a significant as a complete OS install, for them they not only have to pay for the upgrade but the cost will include paying someone to install it for them and with all the confusing versions out there, extra licensing complications I am not surprised at the Lukewarm reaction.
Still amazing it took so long for Vista, looks like the bloat is making it tough for Microsoft.
Oh, I dunno... I'm pretty breathless at the thought of Leopard.
Leopard seems interesting but I am happy with Tiger on my Mac Pro. Unless it offers a significant workflow enhancment, new musthave features I might in 3-5 months otherwise I might wait 1 year.
It will be interesting to see how numbers will jump
1. Leopard with Bootcamp (if possible native Virtualization for XP and Vista)
2. Lowend Macs (White MB and Mac Mini and 17" iMac)
with DVD Burner and Some form of Graphic Card
3. If possible Mac Mini @ $499
MacBook sales already showing if with good hardware and rite price, we can see lots of Swithcers ...It is time apple take aggressive steps to take some more market share
Vista adoptation will be slow compared to XP because of the hardware requirements, this particular time frame, it is upto APPLE to capture market share while iPod HALO effect is still there ..
Amazon's list means absolutely nothing because Dell and HP don't even sell new computers through amazon, and together they account for nearly 60% of all pc's sold.
Macs have been at the top of Amazons "top 10 list" for the past three years and quite frankly, it hasn't proved anything other than the fact that most people don't buy PC's from amazon.com.
Another problem is that even manufacturers much smaller than Apple generally have more models than Apple does. I was surprised a Sony even made it to the list as they are one of the big offenders of having too many models. More models means that a sale for that manufacturer is split down to fewer per model. Maybe the Sony was a particularly good deal for the model or brand.
Also, Amazon is the major place to go to get a sizable discount on a Mac. Pretty much everyone else charges within a few dollars of list price. That has to be a major traffic driver, whereas the rest of the computers are probably not sold at as significant of a discount relative to other stores.

HP does, actually, sell new computers through Amazon.
Actually the fact that other manufacturers have more models that use Vista improves the odds that Vista computers could outsell OS X computers. Assuming there was a large demand for Vista computers.

Nah. Most folks never install an operating system on their computer, or hire a tech to do it. It comes out the box with XP and goes to the skip with XP. From ashes to ashes.
What might be interesting is comparing the length of time Vista takes to reach the same numbers as ... oh ... say Intel Macs. It'll win, but the race will give us an accurate perspective.

Yep. Amazon is a bit of a Mac specialist with those discounts they always have up their sleeves, and the good old iMac/PowerMac iBook/PowerBook grid (rebadged and only added to twice since) does Apple's inventory well.

Ummm.. Right now I'm seeing HP Pavillion desktops at number 6 and number 9 in the rankings.
Below that, Dell is showing up at number 17 in the rankings.8)
You'd think the other 40% of the PC market would still eclipse Mac sales on Amazon, though. Suprisingly, it doesn't. \
.
There are too many other vendors and models on Amazon for a couple of show up that high. Frankly, it wouldn't even occur to me to order a PC from Amazon. Even for Macs I order from the Apple store so I can customize them (BTO).

Really simple. Just think of the flowing logo.

We should be seeing news stories about Vista viruses, hacks and instabilities a couple of months from now.
Completely baseless report....

Btw while its nice to see Apple at #1 in computers but Amazon does not represent the whole market.

EVERYONE, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE TO SPREAD THIS FUD.
For fuck's sake please just go to Amazon.com and type in "HP desktop", "HP laptop",
"Dell desktop" or "Dell laptop" into Amazon.com.
GO APPLE! But people don't go out and buy a new PC because a new OS is released.
Nope, that's because their too busy buying Macs
